Its fellow tech giant Google is also heavily invested in subsea cable-building, with five privately-owned cable projects underway. Google <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-grace-hopper-undersea-subsea-internet-cable-nyc-london-2021-9?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">finished laying its 3,900-mile-long Grace Hopper cable</a> linking the US with Spain and the UK on September 14.</p><p>When Facebook announced the 2Africa cable in <a href="https://engineering.fb.com/2020/05/13/connectivity/2africa/">May 2020</a> it said it would be 37,000 kilometers (22,990 miles) long. <ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>I went on an epic two-week safari in South Africa's famous </strong><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/budget-vs-luxury-safari-africa-private-game-reserves-2024-3"><strong>Kruger National Park</strong></a><strong> for about $50 a day.</strong></li><li><strong>I camped beneath the stars and saw elephants right from my tent.</strong></li></ul><p>The idea of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mistakes-tourists-make-south-africa-safari-from-local-expert-2023-11">South African safari </a>often conjures up images of five-star lodges and luxury game drives — but a holiday in the bush doesn't have to be out of reach for travelers on a tighter budget.</p><p>According to a data analysis from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.go2africa.com/african-travel-blog/annual-african-safari-travel-report-2023">Go2Africa</a>, the average traveler heads on South African safaris with a medium-high budget, meaning they spend $5,500 to $6,000 on a trip, an increase from last year.</p><p>But, on a recent trip, I found that I was able to have an incredible two-week safari trip in Kruger National Park for about $50 a day.</p><p>Here's how I did it and how travelers can save money when planning their safari.</p><h2 id="9ef4a139-7062-4e8c-aa3a-1ccfe4c2a247"><strong>I saved by buying an annual pass</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Giraffe in Kruger National Park" height="657" width="1024" msid="110424879" hostid="261"></div><p>The biggest <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mistakes-tourists-make-africa-safari-according-to-expert-2023-2">savings at Kruger National Park</a> can come from buying a Wild Card, an annual pass that gives you a year of access to 80+ parks in southern Africa, including Kruger.</p><p>The Wild Card is discounted for South Africans but it cost me 3,780 rands, or about $200, as a foreigner.</p><p>Without a Wild Card, I would've had to pay over 486 rands a day to visit Kruger, meaning this pass pays for itself in just over a week.</p><p>Overall, my pass came to about 270 rands a day for the two-week trip.</p><h2 id="ff79ae5c-f453-4f80-baca-61220a0f5ed2"><strong>We also stayed in one of Kruger's many rest camps</strong></h2><p>One of the most immersive ways to experience Kruger is by camping in the South African bush. We saw elephants near our camp and woke up to the sounds of warthogs and hyenas in the distance.</p><p>We <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/surprising-things-moving-to-south-africa-from-us-2022-4">live in South Africa</a>, so it was easy enough to bring our own camping gear, though travelers can rent a tent, sleeping bags, chairs, and cooking basics from nearby rental companies for a few thousand rands for two weeks.</p><p>Kruger National Park has a range of rest <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/glamping-below-freezing-temperatures-winter-review-photos-2023">camps for different budgets</a> and preferences, whether you prefer to use your own tent or stay in a bungalow with your own kitchen and bathroom.</p><p>Prices also vary depending on the season, so it's wise to avoid really busy months, like September and December. I found that around mid-January to mid-March, two people can camp at Punda Maria, one of Kruger's cheapest camping options, for just 285 rands a night. During high season, prices go up by about 100 rands per night.</p><p>My husband and I visited during a less busy season. We camped at Maroela Satellite Camp and Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp for 331 to 349 rands a night.</p><h2 id="c9b3a8c8-2f80-47b2-af3d-dfb173bd1f05"><strong>Cooking our own food saved us money …</strong></h2><p>We chose to prepare our own meals and braai (a type of South African barbecue) beneath the stars.</p><p>Fortunately, most campsites have plug points, braai stands, shared bathrooms, shared kitchens, and shops selling everything you need to braai.</p><p>The park also has restaurants and coffee shops scattered throughout it, which is helpful for anyone who wants to purchase food and drinks without leaving the property.</p><p>But there's nothing quite like braaiing beneath the stars, watching for the occasional hyena along the fence line.</p><h2 id="a4f9b2c3-0e93-488a-9ce6-923233a9f7c6"><strong>… and so did doing a self-driving safari</strong></h2><div type="image" title="car with boar walking behind it in safari in South Africa" height="853" width="1280" msid="110424880" hostid="261"></div><p>If you don't have your own car, you can rent a sedan for just over 4,000 rands for two weeks. Fortunately, though, there are enough tarred roads in Kruger that you don't need a special 4x4 to enjoy the park.</p><p>We ended up self-driving our own car in Kruger National Park, which allowed us to choose our own adventure and be our own guide.</p><p>Rest camps have sighting boards on which visitors pin their major animal sightings from that day and the previous day. This makes it easy to follow trends and choose where to search first. There's also an app where visitors post their sightings.</p><p>On our last <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/safari-horror-stories-2018-9">self-drive safari</a> in Kruger, we saw cheetahs and all the Big Five (leopard, elephant, rhino, lion, and African buffalo).</p><h2 id="c0237982-b3e0-45bf-b1eb-1b75f01b5a9e">Overall, our trip was affordable and dreamy</h2><p>We saved money throughout our trip and managed to go on a two-week safari in Kruger National Park for just under $50 a day per person.</p><p>This price includes two Wild Cards, petrol for our vehicle, and our camping fees and expenses — and our trip was well worth it.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Facebook spent $20 million planning to revive a railway bridge near its office to improve traffic.</li><li>The project, abandoned due to political pressure, may be a glimpse at The Boring Company's future.</li></ul><p>Facebook's failed plans to revive an old railway bridge to ease traffic congestion near its offices are among the latest stumbling points facing future-looking tech companies as they try their hands at solving transportation woes.</p><p>The social media company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-considered-reviving-disused-railway-line-to-silicon-valley-2023-1">planned to renovate the Dumbarton Rail Bridge</a> — an unused railway spanning San Francisco Bay — after it acquired Instagram and Whatsapp, expanding employee headcount nearly ten-fold in six years from 3,200 in 2011 to over 25,000 workers by 2017.</p><p>The bridge was intended to streamline the increased traffic to its headquarters and expand Facebook's property portfolio, renovating the railway that <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/obscuresf/article/The-Dumbarton-Rail-Bridge-was-the-Bay-Area-s-first-16613681.php">laid dormant for 40 years</a>.</p><p>The $20 million project — initiated in 2017 and abandoned in 2020 due to political hurdles and COVID-19 complications, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/08/business/facebook-dumbarton-rail-bridge.html" rel=" nofollow">The New York Times</a>, which published a deep dive into the failed project on Saturday — may be a glimpse at the future of Elon Musk's Boring Company, which has been described by <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/elon-musk-boring-company-tunnel-traffic-11669658396">The Wall Street Journal</a> as "ghosting" major US cities by backing out of proposals to build tunnel systems.</p><p>The Boring Company, an infrastructure company that began as a subsidiary of SpaceX before separating in 2018, has promised since its inception to build high-speed tunnels in major cities in an effort to reduce traffic and improve pedestrian access. It raised <a href="https://www.boringcompany.com/seriescround" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">$657 million in series C investment</a>, giving the company a nearly $5.7 billion valuation.</p><p>Since the completion of its research and development test tunnel in Hawthorne, California in 2018, The Boring Company has completed just one project open to the public: a 1.7 mile loop connecting the campuses of the Las Vegas Convention Center with its Exhibit Hall. </p><p>Plans for other tunnels — including projects in Los Angeles, connecting Washington, DC to Baltimore, and from the Chicago airport to its downtown neighborhood — have been scrapped by The Boring Company.</p><p>Los Angeles proposals to build tunnels under the congested 405 freeway and near Dodger Stadium were abandoned in 2018 and 2021, <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2018/11/28/elon-musks-boring-co-drops-la-westside-tunnel-plan/">TechCrunch reported</a>, after facing <a href="https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-elon-musk-tunnel-ceqa-20180418-story.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">criticism from city council members</a> for being "rushed." </p><p>The DC to Baltimore transit system, announced in 2017, was canceled in 2021 following issues with environmental review processes and permitting delays, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/trafficandcommuting/elon-musk-hyperloop/2021/04/16/b340314e-9edd-11eb-9d05-ae06f4529ece_story.html">The Washington Post reported</a>.</p><p>In Chicago, a 2018 bid by The Boring Company to build high-speed tunnels to the O'Hare Airport was dropped by June 2021, following public criticism of the lack of transparency surrounding the untested technology, <a href="https://www.bizjournals.com/chicago/news/2018/09/26/elon-musks-1b-high-speed-transit-line-to-ohare.html">The Chicago Business Journal reported</a>. </p><p>"Every time I see him on TV with a new project, or whatever, I'm like: Oh, I remember that bullet train to Chicago O'Hare," <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/elon-musk-boring-company-tunnel-traffic-11669658396">The Wall Street Journal reported</a> Chicago city council member Scott Waguespack said, referring to Musk. </p><p>Former senior executives of The Boring Company say <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-boring-company-struggles-retain-staff-long-working-hours-2022-11">the company is struggling to retain engineers and technical staff</a>, given Musk's strict leadership style, which includes <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-dangers-of-overwork-2018-8" rel="">working 120-hour weeks</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-sleeping-habits-tesla-factory-floor-twitter-late-nights-2022-11" rel="">sleeping on couches in his factories</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tells-twitter-tesla-staff-be-hardcore-old-email-2022-11">expecting employees to do the same</a>.</p><p>The Boring Company was created after a series of seemingly joking <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/810108760010043392">2016 tweets</a> sent in the early morning hours by Musk, in which he complained about traffic and promised to start digging tunnels. </p><p>"Traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging...," he <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/810156881662590981">posted</a> at 5:05 a.m. A few hours later he <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/810156881662590981" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added</a>: "I am actually going to do this."<a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/810108760010043392"></a></p><p>While reporters and consumers immediately <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2016/12/17/13993754/elon-musk-tunnel-boring-tesla-spacex">questioned whether Musk was serious</a> about creating The Boring Company, early progress on its development silenced critics for several years.</p><p>Now, on its <a href="https://www.boringcompany.com/projects">website</a>, the only currently listed tunnel projects include modifications to the Las Vegas Loop. It's unclear whether The Boring Company will submit additional bids for tunnel projects in the future or complete the scheduled additions to the Vegas Loop.</p><p>Online, <a href="https://twitter.com/IdaReggaeMon/status/1612215718384226304" target="_blank" rel="noopener">critics</a> are <a href="https://twitter.com/LordLard/status/1612212120174878720">voicing</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/drvolts/status/1612212063128125440">concerns</a> that the whole company was a "<a href="https://twitter.com/IdaReggaeMon/status/1612215718384226304" target="_blank" rel="noopener">scam</a>" or "<a href="https://twitter.com/drvolts/status/1612211655672483840">bait and switch</a>" that was "designed to propose automobile alternatives to mass transit projects" and drive business toward his electric vehicle company, Tesla.</p><p>Despite its failed plan to materialize the Dumbarton Rail Bridge project, Facebook has continued massive infrastructure undertakings, largely in the form of submarine cable acquisition and development.</p><p>The social media company, rebranded as Meta since it began the cable development and scrapped the bridge plan, has acquired 6% of operating cable routes worldwide as of 2022, <a href="https://fairinternetreport.com/research/facebook-meta-submarine-cable-ownership">according to Fair Internet Report</a>, a market research firm. By the time its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-facebook-giant-undersea-cables-internet-tech-2021-9">2Africa infrastructure project</a> is completed, Meta will hold an interest in more than 13% of the world's submarine cable infrastructure, spanning 33 countries and touching 36% of the global population.</p><p>Though the future of The Boring Company's tunnels remains unclear, it appears Musk will continue to attempt to innovate existing infrastructure through his many businesses — including plans to use Tesla's energy storage technology to "shift the entire energy infrastructure and transport infrastructure of earth," <a href="https://electrek.co/2022/06/09/elon-musk-reveals-tesla-master-plan-part-3/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Electrek, a transportation news service, reported</a>.</p><p>Representatives for Facebook and The Boring Company did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.</p>

Everything coming to — and leaving — Netflix in March

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>DreamWorks Animation</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>"How to Train Your Dragons 2" is in theaters this weekend and it needs to be a big hit for DreamWorks Animation.</p>
<p>The studio has taken write-downs on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dreamworks-animation-more-sequels-2014-4" target="_blank">three of its last four movie</a>s and has said it needs <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dreamworks-animation-has-a-lot-on-the-line-with-the-croods-2013-3" target="_blank">every movie going forward to be a hit</a> in order to be successful.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">That shouldn't be a problem with since the series about a </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Viking teen, Hiccup,</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> and his dragon is the company's most popular property right now</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> and has the potential to be its most profitable. (DWA believes in it so much that CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg mentioned a third movie <a href="http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=29638" target="_blank">back in 2010</a>.)</span></p>
<p>The "How to Train Your Dragons" sequel is expected to make north of <a href="http://www.boxoffice.com/latest-news/2014-06-13-north-america-22-jump-street-starts-with-55-million-thursday-night" target="_blank">$55 million opening weekend</a>; however, it faces steep competition from "22 Jump Street" starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. Estimates have that film bringing in closer to $60 million.</p>
<p>$55 million would be a better start than the original film which debuted to $43.7 million, but it wouldn't come anywhere close to one of the best openings for a DreamWorks Animation movie.</p>
<p>The three "Shrek" sequels all opened to more than $70 million, after that two "Madagascar" sequels have made more than $60 million. "How to Train Your Dragons 2" could certainly make more than $55 million, but it's not often that you have two movies opening weekend that both perform above $50 million.</p>
<p>Both new films also have a lot of competition from still popular movies "The Fault in Our Stars," Disney's "Maleficent," and Tom Cruise's "Edge of Tomorrow."</p>
<p>The first "How to Train Your Dragons" film went on to make <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=howtotrainyourdragon.htm" target="_blank">$494.9 million</a> at theaters.</p>
<p>DWA's last successful film, "The Croods," brought in <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=croods.htm" target="_blank">$587 million</a> worldwide. That movie was a new original property for the studio.</p>
<p>DreamWorks Animation is at least expecting this movie to clear $500 million, if not surpass that of "The Croods." Every single sequel DWA has put out to date has cleared at least $600 million.</p>
