To get the diaper days over with, some would say.My husband and I worked full-time, and our <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sending-my-kids-back-daycare-after-holidays-was-so-hard-2022-1">kids went to day care</a> as soon as my maternity leave was up after 12 weeks. Our day care facility charged a monthly fee that stayed the same every month, even if we chose to keep the kids out of day care for family vacations or other activities.We <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trip-to-la-for-plane-watching-and-in-n-out-burger-2020-2">would fly to California</a> every December to spend time with my family. This week was always fun: getting together with my siblings at our parents' house to enjoy the holiday festivities. But it was also exhausting, beginning with the four-hour flight with three kids, one of which was a beefy lap child. Holding him was like wrestling a 30-pound carp for four hours — not particularly fun. After a week of sleeping in unfamiliar beds and making sure my kids didn't destroy my parents' house, we were ready to head home and get back to our routine.When we returned home, I still had another week of vacation. My office was closed the last week of the year, which meant I had a quandary: Do I take my kids out of day care, or do I send them, since I <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/childcare-too-expensive-unaffordable-2024-3">have to pay for the week anywa</a>y?I chose to send them to day care, and it was just what <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/mental-health/how-to-increase-serotonin">I needed to recharge</a>.<h2 id="8c4fe3f6-d626-460b-be99-ecaa2e21e727">Sending my kids to day care while I was off work was good for all of us</h2><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taking-day-off-from-work-was-hard-2022-10">Having the week off of work</a> while my kids went to day care let me rest and recharge after the travel days. I spent my days shopping Target's sales and catching up with friends. I watched my favorite TV shows and picked up fast food that I didn't have to share with anyone.Did I feel a tiny bit guilty? Yes. Was it worth it? Definitely yes.I always justified it in my head that it benefited my kids because they got back into their routine and saw their friends when they returned to day care. But really, it was a great way for me to acknowledge that being a mom is exhausting, and I deserved some time of my own.<h2 id="bc15ed2d-0cdd-4b11-a25f-4af9b0052ab2">My kids are older, and I still take time for myself</h2>I now have three teenagers, and my world differs significantly from those toddler-filled days. There are no day care dropoffs, but instead, rides to the thrift store or pickups of boba or frozen yogurt for after-school treats.I still make time for myself away from my kids, and I feel like it makes me a better mom. I take trips with friends where I'll be away from home for a weekend or longer. I agree to work trips where I might miss back-to-school nights or the annual school carnival.These opportunities help me to build my career and maintain my friendships, and they help my kids learn life skills while I am away.I am lucky that my husband is a very involved partner, but he has a job that doesn't always allow him to be home for dinnertime. My teens all have a few recipes they can make on their own, so they don't have to wait for Dad to get home for them to eat. I write up a schedule of who is in charge of the dishes and cleaning the kitchen while I am away (as the oldest complained that her brothers were leaving it all for her). But really, they do so well while I am away.Taking time for myself shows my kids that I am a person outside of being a mother. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, after all.

I sent my kids to day care and took the week off work. It was just what I needed to recharge.

It's a lot of work and mental stress."Morrison sat down with Business Insider to talk about a typical day at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/expanded-college-football-playoff-when-which-schools-qualify-2022-12">college football fall camp</a>, what inspires him to be a leader, and how his faith helps him persevere on and off the field.<h2 id="b2f9635f-930f-4e5f-b394-64d93f8ec4a8">Fall camp means long hours dedicated to football</h2>Before the season starts, players attend fall camp, which begins in August and lasts three to four weeks. It's an opportunity to get to know their coaches and teammates while preparing for the season and completing intense training regimens."Going into fall camp, going into my third season, I felt amazing," Morrison said. "It's just fun understanding what's at hand and what type of team we have."A typical day starts with Morrison waking up at 7 a.m. and heading to their training facility called the Guglielmino Athletics Complex, or what players have affectionately nicknamed the "Gug" (pronounced goog). This 96,000-square-foot facility houses the meeting rooms, coaches' offices, locker rooms, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-use-weight-room-beginner-personal-trainer-tips-2022-10">weight room equipment</a> areas."So, I get to the Gug at around 7:20 a.m., and then get taped, eat breakfast, do all that stuff," he said. "Then we're at a team meeting by 8 a.m. to go over the flow for practice, and we're on the field at 9 a.m."<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-football-playoff-teams-schools-2022-11">The Fighting Irish</a> always start practice with ball disruptions. This means practicing how to take the ball away from the opposing offense."We learn to attack the ball in different ways, how to figure out the ball carrier, and how we can get the ball out," he said. "Then we go into pre-practice and go over some small formations, and we'll warm up and attack in practice."<h2 id="ce80393c-faf1-44c2-9ebf-e9ca5d510481">There's time for a mid-day nap to recharge</h2>After practice, the players have a 45 to 60-minute break. Morrison prefers to spend his downtime taking a "power nap.""This will get me through the day to restart, reload, and then get back going," he said. He also enjoys listening to music because it helps him unwind and reminds him of his family, especially his mom and siblings."Music gets me through life," he said. "I love listening to my music and relaxing.He's a big fan of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lin-manuel-miranda-work-ethic-hamilton-success-2017-12">Hamilton soundtrack</a> and anything by Adele. "I feel like I'm grounded," he said. "You can just pick a tune that really resonates with what you're going through in life and just kind of take it in."<h2 id="98caad2d-337c-4017-833e-eff1455ae7ae">The day continues with more training until 8 p.m.</h2>During team meetings, they recap what happened earlier in the day. "We'll discuss things we can improve on, and how we want to approach the season," he said.As a player and team captain, Morrison never wants to become complacent. He defines complacency as the moment you stop thinking you can improve."No matter win or loss, I want to improve and become the best version of myself and the best teammate I can be," he said. "The moment I become complacent, I hope my cleats are off because I don't want to ever be complacent in this sport."After strategizing with the team, "we'll go lift, and we'll eat and have a walkthrough, and then a little team meeting, and that's the day," he said. "So, I'll end around 8:00 p.m. and get back to the Gug."The time spent in the weight room is integral to training. "Lifting is kind of our foundation, and we pride ourselves on lifts," he said."We have a long season, so we've got to make sure our bodies are up to par with the high demand that football requires," he said. "I think <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/strength-training-better-cardio-burning-fat-2023-10">lifting is what makes us more durable</a>, able to go longer, run longer, and do things at a high level."<h2 id="fbf9a16f-6fe0-430a-b78b-299526c6bd13">Morrison attributes his leadership style to his family and faith</h2>As the youngest of five siblings, who all play competitive sports, Morrison has always felt like he needed to prove himself to his siblings and older friends. "I just pride myself on working hard and not talking a lot," he said.Getting a word in was tough with four siblings, so he learned to "fall in line," and it's similar with football. "I understand that I have a leadership role, but I like to lead by example like how I was raised," he said.Being team captain is a "huge responsibility," he said. "I think Coach Freeman talked about how you have to be unorthodox and challenge things, and I pride myself on standing true to who I am and who I know the team could be."For Morrison, faith means everything. "Last year, I got away from it a little bit," he said. "And I realized I'm nothing without God. I can have all the success and be empty inside."Going forward, his plan is to remain humble and recognize that he's not perfect. "If I just <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/left-goldman-sachs-career-change-pastor-2024-4">honor God</a> in everything I do, the rest will be taken care of," he said. Business Insider has verified her employment. The following has been edited for length and clarity.I grew up in an entrepreneurial family. My parents work at a family catering restaurant they've run for 30 years. They started a few businesses when I was a child and openly discussed the ups and downs of their businesses' operations.I knew I wanted to do something in business. I thought internships would help me figure out what.I got an internship at a local hedge fund in highschool. I worked there for two summers and one school year.I attended Florida State University and majored in finance. In 2017, my junior year of college, I had a summer financial internship at Thomson Reuters in New York.Those were formative summers for me. Through my exposure as an intern, I learned I liked working with a smaller team, where I had a lot of responsibilities and more creativity, versus a bigger investment house where everyone stays in their lane.I noticed there are ways to move up the corporate ladder at a bigger firm, but maybe not as quickly as at a younger, smaller firm.<h2 id="26c27631-144f-4aad-b290-8f95876eeb4d">Networking helped me land my job in venture capital</h2>At my high school hedge fund internship, I met Maggie Vo, now the managing general partner at Fuel Venture Capital, and got to know her well.I made a point of maintaining the relationship at college. I updated her on my progress and asked about hers.Maggie saw that I was willing to learn quickly and had the work ethic to contribute to the firm. She offered me an internship right after I graduated from college.Connecting with people in venture capital and maintaining those connections is imperative for young people. When you don't have quantitative metrics to prove your worth, industry connections can help. Reaching out meaningfully, even once a quarter, makes relationships warmer.<h2 id="d80906a1-7251-4830-9016-5b91f5bbfaab">Why I chose VC over investment banking and financial services</h2>At the time, I was considering opportunities in investment banking and financial service firms and was fielding full time offers.I chose Fuel because I would work with the investment side and directly with the founders. You don't often get exposure to both sides in a larger firm.When I joined Fuel in 2018, it was a small team of managers with one fund. I could work directly with senior leadership and access all the different parts of the business.It was also a rare opportunity to get into VC early.The typical path into VC starts with working a few years in investment banking, then a few years in a small private equity firm, and then you get a chance at VC. It can take 10 years. The alternative is to get an internship early, prove yourself, and work your way up.These days, there are more early opportunities. Some firms offer entry-level positions within the investment team, but they aren't common. Firms usually want to see that background before coming into VC.<h2 id="3b8bc890-7a6a-4da0-b3cb-bab35ee2a118">I worked my way up from intern to partner in under 7 years</h2>Fuel offered me a full time role three months after I started as an intern at 22. I then worked my way up through several more analyst roles.In the early days, I worked alongside Maggie on the investments team. I tried to absorb as much information as possible from meetings.I was working on decks, putting together due diligence packages on potential portfolio companies, and working on internal processes.I had to work harder since I didn't come to VC from the traditional investment banking path. For the first two years, I immersed myself in the industry, reading as much as possible and listening to industry podcasts.Now, I've done everything from refilling the printer to facilitating successful exits.You need to make yourself indispensable and understand every aspect of the business to thrive. Learning how to communicate effectively with everyone — founders, investors, and colleagues — was especially crucial.One easy, surefire way to move up the ranks is to know what your boss wants and, if possible, meet them there.When I first started as an intern, I also worked directly with Jeff Randsell, Fuel's founding partner. I noticed that he'd spent 25 years working his way up at Merrill Lynch. Because he'd been exposed to that cutthroat environment, I always made sure to be the last person to leave the office. He didn't say this was an expectation, but I hoped he'd recognize my hard work. I think it ultimately contributed to my getting a full time position at Fuel.<h2 id="6b480740-0c25-42a2-9afd-640b460a9dca">I shifted roles and got promoted to partner</h2>An opportunity to move on to operations arose in 2022. I never saw myself in operations because I thought it was a paperwork, back-office role. But it felt like a natural progression in my career, and I still got to work with founders and investors — now I'd understand even more about the business.Coming into the operations side, I had a good macro view of the firm I'd built up in my first four years.In this role, I work with third-party partners, run the audit process, and work directly with the tax and legal teams. I'm also involved in the investment side but with compliance. I even learned how to form a fund from the bottom up.I was promoted to partner,which was very important.<h2 id="d7507795-b2ba-4968-8b0f-430ba4120462">I've put in 110% effort to make it as a woman in VC</h2>With most jobs in finance including VC, there are fewer women at the table. You have to prove yourself and overcome implicit bias when you're a woman or a minority.I account for this by putting in 110% effort and a lot more planning and preparation to ensure I'm viewed as equal to everyone around me.Switching gears and interacting with a stressed founder and then a member of the tax team has been valuable to my career progress. The women I work with are very good at balancing many different things simultaneously. They are also observant and ask hard questions.These skills were especially useful in 2021 when founders went from capital exuberance to more scarcity. Everyone found this challenging.<h2 id="9be33f2f-2918-4b52-9330-3a9e63106dc0">VC means long hours, but it's fulfilling</h2>It's an 80 to 100-hour workweek industry. You have to enjoy the work. If not, it will be miserable.VC has turned out to be a great fit for me, and it's a career path I'm fully committed to.My entire journey has been so fulfilling with Fuel. I've seen founders' growth trajectories and how that's positively impacted all the people they employ and the generational wealth they're creating for their own families.While numbers heavily drive VC, it's also about gut instinct, relationships, and networking. You have to have intuition and move on it. It's not about waiting for direction. While you learn along the way, curiosity, and emotional intelligence are essential at the entry level.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Federal Reserve is expected to cut interest rates by 25 basis points on Thursday.</li><li>It follows a 50-basis-point rate cut in September — the first cut in four years.</li></ul>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-kamala-harris-election-biggest-moments-photos-2024-10">election</a> isn't the only important event facing Americans this week.On Thursday, the Federal Open Market Committee will announce its next decision on interest rates, and it's likely to be another cut. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">CME FedWatch</a>, which forecasts interest rate changes based on market predictions, estimated an all-but-certain 25 basis point cut as of Friday afternoon.The Fed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-cuts-interest-rates-how-much-september-fomc-powell-inflation-2024-9">cut interest rates by 50 basis points</a> in September — the first cut in four years and one twice the size of the central bank's typical 25-point increments — following aggressive inflation fighting as the country recovered from the pandemic.Fed chair Jerome Powell said during remarks at a Nashville conference in late September that "if the economy performs as expected," it would mean two more 25-basis-point cuts this year. As the November and December meetings were the only two remaining in 2024 at the time of those remarks, that would mean standard-size cuts at both."Overall, the economy is in solid shape," Powell said. "We intend to use our tools to keep it there."There have been several data releases since the last rate cut that suggest the economy is in good shape. September's jobs report showed unemployment fell that month. Recent price index data shows headline inflation has slowed. Real <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gdp-gross-domestic-product-third-quarter-economy-2024-10">gross domestic product</a> rose at an annualized rate of 2.8% in the third quarter, similar to the 3% growth in the second quarter.The last major data release before the meeting held some bad news, but with a catch. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/october-jobs-report-unemployment-rate-nonfarm-payroll-growth-federal-reserve-2024-11">October's jobs report</a> published this past Friday, at first glance, showed a big slowdown. The economy added just 12,000 jobs over the month, far below the forecast of 106,000. However, the data was heavily affected by thousands of workers on strike at Boeing and other companies, as well as Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which likely drove that headline figure artificially down and did not reflect a slowing but still strong underlying labor market.In October, 512,000 people in nonfarm industries didn't work because of bad weather, around eight times the previous 20-year October average of 63,000. The unemployment rate — for which BLS said data collection was less affected by the hurricanes — was unchanged from September's 4.1%.Cory Stahle, an economist at the Indeed Hiring Lab, told Business Insider that October's jobs report "validates the recent rate cut we saw from the Federal Reserve and probably keeps them on their rough timeline with continuing to offer cuts to keep the labor market strong."Meanwhile, inflation is near the Fed's target rate of 2%. The personal consumption expenditures price index, which is closely watched by the central bank, increased 2.1% in September from September 2023, a cooldown from the previous 2.3%. Core PCE, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose at 2.7% for the third consecutive month. The year-over-year rise in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-september-cpi-consumer-price-index-federal-reserve-interest-rates-2024-10">consumer price index</a> has also slowed down.A cooling job market and slowing price growth gives the Fed "further confidence in their ability to cut rates without reigniting inflation," Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter, told BI.It will take some time for Americans to feel the impact of September's rate cut, along with any upcoming ones, because of lags in industries like housing, cars, and credit cards."Borrowers should understand that 'falling interest rates' are not the same as 'low interest rates,'" Greg McBride, Bankrate's chief financial analyst, said in a commentary. "Quite the opposite, as interest rates are high and will only decline to 'not as high' as 2024 comes to a close and we move into 2025."Powell has maintained that he will make decisions solely based on data. Despite the upcoming election this week, he has repeatedly said politics remain separate from the central bank."Our job is to support the economy on behalf of the American people, and if we get it right, this will benefit the American people significantly," Powell <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/interest-rate-cut-trump-fed-powell-reaction-independence-history-2024-9">said</a> during a September press conference. "It's something we all take very, very seriously. We don't put up any other filters. It was her mother's bucket list vacation, she told BI, estimating that they paid $9,000 to $10,000 per person to spend 10 days at three luxury Tanzanian lodges (plus an additional three days in Zanzibar)."It's a trip we had talked about for many years, and realistically, it just wasn't affordable for us in the past," Serrano said. After the COVID-19 pandemic, interest has increased strongly.The company offers dozens of these adventurous itineraries. Most first-timers book its 14-day Kenya and Tanzania program, which promises the opportunity to spot the "Big Five" — lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceroses, and Cape buffalos — starting at about $24,800 per person in 2025, it said.Dennis Pinto, the managing director of high-end safari operator Micato Safaris, told BI in an email that demand for its vacations has been "stronger than ever."<div type="image" title="people sitting on car near rhinos" height="1416" width="1888" msid="114953952" hostid="261" sizebytes="243072"></div>Micato's bookings ballooned 21.4% from 2023 to 2024, he said. "It was an emotional trip.""It is pricey, but it's worth the sacrifice," Serrano said.She may travel for a living, but "nothing will compare to a safari."
