As such, the White House team led by him had to find other ways to protect communities from this pandemic virus. Based on some early modelling and additional modelling commissioned in 2006, they found the relevance of non-pharmaceutical interventions, community measures like closing schools and cancelling public gatherings, social distancing as well as isolation and quarantine for people that have been confirmed or suspected to have the virus. "If you put all of these things together, and importantly if you did them early in a coordinated fashion, you couldn't have a very big impact on the transmission of the virus in a community," he said, adding that this guidance was published in 2007. Emphasising the importance of doing these things early in the outbreak, he cautioned that else it would be much harder to prevent a large number of people from getting infected and accomplishing the goals of flattening the curve and delaying the peak of the curve. "So here I think it's very important that India took (lockdown) action now, ….. like many countries, there isn't widespread availability of diagnostic testing. And so it's hard to know how much virus is in any given community in India," he said. "We also know that the threat is greater in India than it may be in other places because of the population density. Also, there are significant portions of the population that don't have access to the healthcare services that would be necessary to take care of large numbers of sick people. So, it (social mitigation measures) becomes even more important in India than it's important everywhere," Venkayya said. Observing that none of the community interventions are perfect, he said if one puts a number of imperfect interventions together, then one can have a very significant positive impact on reducing virus transmission. Prior to Takeda, Venkayya served as director of Vaccine Delivery in the Global Health Program at the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation, where he was responsible for the Foundation's efforts in polio eradication and new vaccine introduction. While at the foundation, he served on the Board of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI). The death toll due to COVID-19 has gone up to 273 and the number of cases has climbed to 8,356 in India, according to the Health Ministry.  Even though banks are an essential service, some bankers aren’t being allowed to leave their home by state authorities, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). To address the situation the Ministry of Finance has written to the chief secretaries of all states to allow the physical movement of bank employees.

 “It is expected that people’s need for and reliance on electronic and digital modes of payment, and ATMs for cash withdrawals, will be greater in the days to come,” said the letter by Madnesh Kumar Mishra, joint secretary to the government of India.

 In Chandigarh, the administration has issued a list of 27 branches that will be allowed to stay open even though there’s a curfew imposed on the city. In Mumbai, where a curfew has also been imposed, government-owned Bank of Baroda is reimbursing its employees with ₹200 a day to cover their transit costs as public transportation shut down.

 Canara Bank took a different approach. It is going to credit each employee’s salary with an extra ₹1,000 at the end of the month for sanitizer, masks and other sanitary supply expenditures.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Peloton spiked Wednesday after the company published earnings and its CEO teased a comeback. </li><li>The company narrowed its net losses, but it's the eighth straight quarter it has failed to turn a profit.</li></ul>Peloton stock surged 21% on Wednesday after the fitness company posted second-quarter fiscal results and CEO Barry McCarthy teased an "epic comeback" to investors. The exercise equipment maker was trading at $15.64 as of 2:18 p.m. ET. Peloton's reported revenue beat Wall Street's estimates, based on a survey of analysts by Refinitiv. The stationary fitness equipment maker known for its stationary bike posted $792.7 million in revenue versus analysts' estimates of $710 million.The company said its net losses declined 24%, dropping to $335.4 million from $439.4 million a year prior.However, this is the eighth straight quarter the company has failed to turn a profit.Still, its CEO says that the quarter marks a turning point for Peloton."If you've been wondering whether or not Peloton can make an epic comeback, this quarter's results show the changes we're making are working," McCarthy said in a statement to shareholders on Wednesday.McCarthy added: "This was by far our best quarterly performance in my twelve months with Peloton. Most of the executive team is also relatively new to Peloton and new to their teams. Given what we've already accomplished, imagine what's possible once the team finds its groove."Peloton was a favorite of the pandemic, as customers flocked to the company for its at-home fitness equipment while gyms remained closed during lockdown. From the early days of the pandemic to October 2020, the <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/jonathanponciano/2020/10/15/peloton-stock-soared-350-in-2020/?sh=249f37981ccc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">company's stock spiked</a> more than 300%. However, the company's fortunes soured as Covid restrictions lifted and people gradually left home for their fitness routines. Peloton implemented cost cutting measures, including mass layoffs. Despite Peloton's stock's recent rally, shares are still roughly 87% lower from their record high."We were on the brink of extinction, and that's no longer the case," McCarthy told Bloomberg on Wednesday. "We've put to bed questions about the viability of the business."
