Kia gave it a boxy, SUV-style appearance and decided to call it a "multipurpose vehicle" instead of a minivan, but included the staple sliding minivan doors and optional captain's chairs in the middle row.<div type="image" title="A team Kia Carnival minivan." height="5122" width="3415" msid="88763106" hostid="261"></div>The Carnival starts at $32,100, and every model features a 290-horsepower V6 engine, front-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and seating for either seven or eight passengers. But only the $46,100 SX Prestige trim got the organization's best headlight-safety rating; every other trim got its worst headlight rating <a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/kia/carnival-minivan/2022#headlights">due to inadequate visibility</a>. <h2>What stands out: affordable luxury</h2>My husband and I spent an evening in the Carnival's VIP second-row seats, where we leaned them all the way flat as he watched YouTube videos on the van's video screens and I attempted to see how good its child-safety precautions were by closing my limbs in the windows and doors. It makes you want to sleep in it. It makes you wonder how a family could ever dream of having a road-trip fight in it. It might be a family van, but it makes you wonder why luxury chauffeur cars even exist. They're flashy and expensive, sure, but the value proposition? As you sit in the Carnival's second-row seats — laid out, phone charging in the USB port next to you, gazing out of its two sunroofs with an air vent on your face, and adjusting your personal climate controls — you realize that you don't need more than this $50,000 family van. You'd be silly to think you did.This, you think, This is where I want to be.<div type="image" title="A team Kia Carnival minivan." height="3333" width="5137" msid="88763111" hostid="261"></div>There are cup holders everywhere, including four in the center console for the driver and front passenger. The black-and-caramel interior scheme on our loaner — including two-tone leather, two-tone interior door panels, and a shiny black-and-silver dashboard — looks upscale. The exterior looks just as sleek. The speaker sound is good for everyone, from the front row to the third. The van is so big that, if only for a moment, you think you could live out of it. It might even be fun.<div type="image" title="A team Kia Carnival minivan." height="4670" width="3456" msid="88763113" hostid="261"></div>Kia also made sure the Carnival's top-trim interior is cohesive, even if it switches from supple accent leathers and door materials in the front seats to harder, more durable ones to handle kids riding in the back. You don't notice the change unless you're looking for it, and the van's owners still get to reap all of the benefits.<div type="image" title="A team Kia Carnival minivan." height="4670" width="3456" msid="88763113" hostid="261"></div>Outside of a $360,000 McLaren 720S, the Carnival is perhaps the most popular review loaner I've ever had. Friends and family saw the photos of the VIP seats online and would rush out to see the car when I was driving it, each hopping in the second row, reclining the chairs for themselves, and letting the air vents blow the summer heat off of their faces. They checked out the 360-degree parking camera and the one that monitors rear passenger activity. They marveled at how, if the Carnival didn't have sliding doors, you'd think it was an SUV. They sat and soaked it up, just as we had before them. If that's any indication of how others feel, the Carnival is exactly the slam dunk Kia intended it to be.<h2>What falls short: susceptible to stains and grime</h2>The Carnival has few flaws.<div type="image" title="A team Kia Carnival minivan." height="3168" width="5160" msid="88763115" hostid="261"></div>The van's light-gray headliner — a feature that often appears on cheaper cars in place of color-matched material, which felt especially odd in a vehicle as nice as the Carnival — distracts from the beauty of its caramel and black interior. If the headliner were black instead, it would accomplish two goals: making the interior even prettier and avoiding stains.Stains? you think. Gravity exists. No one's going to stain the roof of their car.I've seen roof stains, dear reader. You're not immune, and roof stains aren't cute. <div type="image" title="A team Kia Carnival minivan." height="2253" width="4313" msid="88763116" hostid="261"></div>The van also suffers from something many other new cars do: piano-black accents and a shiny, grime-magnet of a touchscreen. Piano black is a loathsome material that modern automakers love to use, despite the fact that it looks good for 12 seconds before it needs to be fully wiped down (or ripped out and replaced). There's a ton of piano black surrounding the Carnival's front seats, and it will attract all of your dust particles and finger grease. I'm sorry in advance. The Carnival's steering is dull, it's slow to accelerate, and its front-wheel-drive system struggles to put the van's power down if you need to floor it. Your front wheels will wiggle back and forth just slightly, but other than making you feel a little silly, it's not an issue. <div type="image" title="A team Kia Carnival minivan." height="2876" width="4348" msid="88763117" hostid="261"></div>There's dull road noise on rough surfaces and slight wind noise on highways, but that can be washed out by a low radio volume (or the existential peace that comes from being reclined all the way back in those second-row seats).But the most glaring issue isn't about comfort or road noise. It's that the Carnival doesn't have a hybrid option like other minivans on the market, meaning buyers are doomed to get 22 mpg combined unless one comes around. Whether that's worth it is up to you.<h2>Our impressions: perfection in minivan form</h2>Kia might want you to think of the Carnival as a "multipurpose vehicle" instead of a minivan, since minivans ceased to be "cool" a couple of decades ago. But the Carnival is a minivan, and it's a damn good one. It's also a three-row chariot that sells for less than $50,000 in its highest trim, which is incredible in a car market where the average new vehicle <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/used-new-car-prices-surging-chip-shortage-2021-10">costs $45,000</a>. <div type="image" title="A team Kia Carnival minivan." height="2833" width="5112" msid="88763119" hostid="261"></div>The Carnival doesn't just challenge your long-held stereotypes about the things people drive — it asks you why you'd care to spend thousands more on a lesser car for the sake of what others think. If someone who didn't bother to figure that out sees you driving one and makes a worn-out joke about soccer practice, go ahead and laugh.Just know you're laughing at them, not with them.

Review: The Kia Carnival proves that if you don't love minivans, you just haven't come to your senses yet

And while the excitement was not over yet, the company's Executive Director and Chief Sales Officer in India, Tae-Jin Park, made some big revelations about the Korean car maker’s 2021 plans in an exclusive interview with Business Insider. The top executive at Kia India said the company is gearing up to launch its first electric vehicle (EV) in 2021, in the global market, and aims to have 1 million electric vehicles by 2026. "Under our Plan S, we aim to have 11 EV models by 2025 to target 6.6% of the global market for EVs, which is approximately 500,000 units per annum of different segment vehicles and 1 million vehicles cumulatively by 2026. We are working towards launching our first product under Plan S to the global markets by 2021," Park said. However, he highlighted that those EVs might not enter India right after the launch, given the weak infrastructure. Indeed, the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market is now gaining momentum, but the infrastructure continues to be a big challenge for automakers. And, so it is for Kia. The company said its manufacturing plant is already capable of producing electric vehicles, but it will have to wait till EV is viable for Indian consumers. "Electric Vehicles are like completely new technology altogether, which requires strong foundations for people to adapt. With the Seltos and Sonet, we are already exporting to over 70 countries across the world. With this, we have planned to make India a global export hub for Kia," Park said. Given the government's new production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme to boost manufacturing and production, Kia India thinks India will be a key market in its parent company's global scheme of things. The government's PLI scheme includes incentives of ₹57,000 crore over five years and focuses on making Indian companies globally competitive by driving exports. The company's primary aim, for now, is to attain full manufacturing capacity of 300,000 units at its state-of-the-art facility in Anantapur by 2022. The market share of Hyundai and Kia has risen to 36% compared to 28% in FY20. And, Kia said it is now preparing to nurture this love and support in the coming year by expanding its network further. "Hence, based on the market potential, we are finalising our upcoming expansion plan, and we will soon announce that. Hyderabad, Jan 19 () South Korean automaker Kia Motors plans to keep rolling out new models at regular intervals in India as it aims to fully utilise its current installed production capacity of 3 lakh units by March 2022, a senior company official said.
 The company, which has got to a flying start in the country with its first product Seltos, aims to bring in two more models this year.
 It will drive in luxury multi purpose vehicle Carnival at Auto Expo, followed by a compact SUV later during the year.
 Similarly, the company would also look at bringing in two more products next year as well.
 "We have already stated that we will keep introducing a new model every six months. Our first goal right now is to fully exhaust the installed production capacity," Kia Motors India Head Marketing and Sales Manohar Bhat told here.
 It should take around 4-5 models from the company's stables to achieve the target in 2022, he added.
 Kia Motors' manufacturing facility in Andhra Pradesh has an installed production capacity to roll out 3 lakh units per annum on a three shift basis.
 The company is currently running two shifts at the plant.
 Commenting on Carnival, which was showcased here, Bhat said the company would be creating a new segment with the model.
 "Carnival is going to be our flagship model in India. There is no product like it in the country right now. It would meet the evolving needs of elite customers in the country," Bhatt said.
 Carnival will be powered by a 2.2 litre diesel engine with a claimed fuel efficiency of 13.9 km per litre.
 "We will redefine the market place with this product as well as we did with Seltos. It will have BS-VI compliant engine right from the start," Bhat said.
 When asked to comment on sales expectations from the model, he added that the company is not looking at it from volume point of view, but wants to showcase its prowess in terms of quality and luxury.
 The compact SUV model, which would be showcased at the Auto Expo and launched later during the year, would be more of a volume cruncher for the company, he added.
 On sales network expansion, Bhat said the company is already present in 165 locations across the country with 200 dealerships.

This is in line with the automaker’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/auto/news/maruti-suzuki-announces-price-hike-from-january-2023/articleshow/95941950.cms">statement</a> last December that its cars would get costlier from January 2023 due to inflation and regulatory requirements. In a regulatory filing with the exchanges on Monday, Maruti Suzuki said that the price increase is calculated using ex-showroom prices of Delhi. Maruti Suzuki, in its earlier filing in December 2022, had said it was forced to pass on the increased cost pressures it was facing to the customers. “The Company continues to witness increased cost pressure driven by overall inflation and recent regulatory requirements. In November 2022, premium car maker Volvo hiked the price of the XC40 Recharge, XC60, and XC90 SUVs in India by up to 1.8%, citing increase in input costs due to disruptions in the global supply chain. A recent <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/auto/news/tata-motors-mulling-price-hike-for-passenger-vehicles-from-next-month/articleshow/96003489.cms">report</a> revealed that Tata Motors is planning another price hike in January 2023. During the last hike in April 2022, the automaker increased the prices of its popular cars, such as its hatchback Swift, Alto, Baleno, Ertiga and more by up to ₹22,000. In January 2022, the prices of its cars were hiked in the range of ₹21,000-30,000. Earlier in January, Maruti Suzuki had reported a decline in sales for December 2022. The company sold 1.12 lakh cars in December 2022, down from 1.23 lakh in December 2021. The automaker took the biggest hit in the mini, compact and mid-size segments as the sales in these segments fell to 68,421 units in December 2022, from 86,869 units in December 2021. These segments include cars like the Swift and the Baleno.
