<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It released a new line of flash drives called <a href="http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/portablessdt1/overview.html">Portable SSD T1</a>, and it looks pretty cool for a USB flash drive.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The T1 has a sleek black chrome surface and is the size of a business card. It weighs about 30 grams, which translates to roughly an ounce.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">But it's the transfer speed that really makes T1 worth writing about. Samsung claims it has read/write speeds of up to 450 MB per second, which is three to seven times faster than a regular external hard disk drive (HDD). With that speed, you can transfer a 3GB movie file in just eight seconds, or a 10GB movie file in about 27 seconds, it says.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The T1 comes in three models (250GB/500GB/1TB) and the price ranges from $179 to $599. It will be available in the US, European, and Asian markets later this month.</span></p>

At this point, there's one huge issue with both consoles: storage space.<p>That's right - the least exciting aspect of both consoles is also their biggest flaw.</p><p>Each console is equipped with 500GB of storage out of the box; the issue is that games are huge. How huge? Upwards of 60GB. It doesn't take a skilled mathematician to see how many games will fit on your system.</p><p>And unlike consoles of the past, you can't just insert the disk and play. You have to actually install each game on the hard drive. That of course includes games you download from Xbox online to play.</p><p>Microsoft announced plans on Tuesday to fix the flaw: a 1TB version of the Xbox One. Finally! It looks the same as the original Xbox One, only with more space. Here's a video of the console with some extra information, straight from Microsoft:</p><div><div><iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Q86LNWlQEg0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div></div><p class="embed-spacer">Yes, there's also a slightly altered version of the Xbox One gamepad. It now works with any headset that has a standard 1/8th-inch jack (the one on your headphones). That's pretty great too, as it means you don't have to buy the silly adapter Microsoft was otherwise selling for $25. And yes, the original Xbox One is now permanently less expensive at $350 (down from $400).</p><p>But most importantly, you can download more than 10 games without worrying about deleting older games and potentially re-downloading them down the line.</p><p>If that sounds like a problem only "hardcore gamers" face, Business Insider's Matt Johnston - a self-admitted "casual" game player - rebukes that notion with his own experience. After getting an Xbox One during the holiday season of 2014, he's already running up against storage constraints. He has to keep deleting older games in order to play new ones. Given the size of these games, re-downloading them is both cumbersome and time-intensive. Worse still, even games purchased on disc require massive installations - the issue isn't solved by just going analog.</p><p>Sony, meanwhile, has yet to introduce a PlayStation 4 with larger internal storage. That doesn't mean the company doesn't have one in the pipeline - an <a href="https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&amp;RequestTimeout=500&amp;calledFromFrame=N&amp;application_id=rHKTPKB2ImYOlpZY6S4XZQ%3D%3D&amp;fcc_id=AK8CUH120Z1">FCC registration</a> popped up earlier this month. Microsoft finally just solved everyone's biggest problem with the new Xbox

<h3>1) Uninstall unused programs</h3>
<p>New PCs come with a whole load of programs you will never use, and you probably don't even know they exist.</p>
<p>Some programs even run background processes when you load your computer, even though you are not using them.</p>
<p>To remove all these pointless programs, open the Control Panel's Programs and Features page, and have a trawl through the list of installed software. Uninstall those that you do not need, while being careful to leave programs your computer's hardware needs (typically their publisher will be listed as the PC maker's name or as Microsoft).</p>
<p>If you are still unsure about which programs to use, try a third-party called such as <a href="http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/">PC Decrapifier</a>- it's free for non-commercial use - which should tell you which programs you don't want or need.</p>
<h3>2) Automatically delete temporary files</h3>

<p>Temporary files amass on your computer through everyday tasks and can remain on your hard disk, slowing the computer down. Getting rid of these files, including your internet history and cookies, should give you a larger amount of hard disk space, speeding up your PC.</p>
<p>To do this, open "My Computer", and select your local drive (usually C:\). Select the "Windows" folder and then open the folder titled "Temp".</p>
<p>Use your mouse to right-click on the folder, and in the "View" options, choose "Details". Once this is done, select all the files that are older than the current date and press the delete key. Then go to the Recycle Bin on your desktop and empty it.</p>
<h3>3) Install a solid state drive</h3>
<p>Hard drives are the biggest cause of slow speeds and especially slow startup speeds on your PC.</p>
<p>While <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5616023/are-solid+state-drives-worth-the-money">they are not cheap</a>, installing a solid state drive, which have extremely fast read times, can speed up your startup considerably.</p>
<h3>4) More hard drive storage</h3>
<p>Even if you make sure to regularly clean out all your temporarily files, if your hard drive becomes 85 per cent full, it's going to affect your computer's speed.</p>
<p>If you regularly film videos or use your PC for recording television, then you will want as big a hard drive as you can get, upwards of 1TB in size.</p>

<h3>5) Prevent unnecessary start ups</h3>
<p>This method will primarily affect how long it takes for your laptop or PC to startup, but often many of the programs which are launched on startup continue to run and use up your computer's memory.</p>
<p>To do this, click "Start" and "Run". In "Run", type "msconfig" and then press enter. You should then see the "Startup" tab, with all the programs ticked the ones which will load upon your computer starting up. There is a good chance the list will contain a number of programs you might not have realised were running on your computer during startup, or even at all.</p>
<p>You can either manually deselect those which you do not want to load, or click "Disable All" and then select those you want to run, such as particularly important programs like anti-virus software.</p>
<p>Another trick can be removing all the unnecessary fonts Windows loads. Windows 7 loads more than 200 fonts on startup which can slow down the speed at which it boots up. Go to the Start Menu's search box, search for the Fonts folder and check off all the fonts you don't need, and click the "Hide" button in the toolbar.</p>
<h3>6) More RAM</h3>
<p>RAM, which stands for Random Access Memory, is the temporary storage memory used by your computer and is in use when tasks are being executed by different programs. Therefore, the more programs you use, the more RAM you need, and the slower your computer will be if you don't have enough.</p>
<p>A clear indicator of not having enough RAM is if your computer slows down every time you try and process large files, or it freezes will carrying out several different actions at once.</p>
<p>You can either add more RAM with an extra memory stick or two, or buy getting completely new memory if all the slots are taken. There is theoretically no upper limit on the amount of RAM that you can have with a 64-bit operating system, but in practical terms 4GB is more than enough for most people.</p>

<h3>7) Run a disk defragment</h3>
<p>Sounds complicated, but this is basically a way of reconfiguring how your hard drive stores information for maximum efficiency.</p>
<p>Go to "My Computer", right-click on the hard drive and select "Properties". Under the "Tools" tab there should be an option to "Defragment Now".</p>
<h3>8) Run disk clean up</h3>
<p>Windows also includes a built-in disk de-cluttering tool called "Disk Cleanup".</p>
<p>It searches through the system for unnecessary large files such as temporary Internet files, program installers, and so on.</p>
<p>Open Disk Cleanup by clicking "Start &gt; All Programs &gt; Accessories &gt; System Tools &gt; Disk Cleanup".</p>
<h3>9) Give your computer a static IP</h3>
<p>Another trick for speeding up your computer loading time is to give your computer a static IP address that never changes.</p>
<p>When you startup your computer, it spends a decent amount of time asking the network for an IP address. Not only does having a static IP address make the network easier to manage (particularly if you have several devices using the same network), but it also cuts time off your startup.</p>
<p>To do this, visit the "Network and Sharing Center", and select "Change adapter settings". Right click on your local adapter and select "Properties". You then need to highlight what should be titled "Internet Protocoal Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and click the properties button.</p>
<p>In "Use the following IP address" enter in the correct IP, Subnet mask, and Default gateway which <a href="http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/19249/how-to-assign-a-static-ip-address-in-xp-vista-or-windows-7/">correspond with your network setup.</a></p>
<p>Make sure to check "Validate settings upon exit" so Windows can find any problems with the addresses you entered.</p>
<p>To find out what your IP, subnet mask and default gateway are, go to "Start" and then "Run", and type in "cmd". At the command prompt, type "IPCONFIG/All" and it should come up, as shown below.</p>

<h3>10) Hoovering out the dust</h3>
<p>Again, this sounds a tad radical, but dust is your computer's enemy. It can impede airflow, which is vital to keeping your computer's temperature down, and if your computer is overheating, it is likely it will slow down its performance to cope.</p>
<p>(Incidentally, overheating will also make it impossible to use programs such as Skype, because for the person on the other end of the conversation it constantly sounds like an aeroplane is taking off).</p>
<p>If you have a desktop or a laptop, you can take off the computer's exterior and use a hoover on a low power setting to try and remove some of the dust. Make sure your computer has been switched off for at least 30 minutes and that all cables are disconnected before starting your clean.</p>
<p>Use your hoover with a small attachment, and try either the reverse setting to blow air into the vents and push the dust out, or use its standard suction to try and extract some of the dust.</p>

I now back up everything to two highly reliable external hard drives and then use iCloud, Google Drive, and Google Photos as a fail-safe for my most important files and low-res copies of all my photos. </strong></li></ul><p>Mistakes are inevitable when you travel for a living. Flights are missed, visa forms are forgotten, and travel pillows and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pack-for-travel-electronics-dopp-kit-2019-1">power adapters</a> get left in hotel rooms.</p><p>I've learned to live with those kinds of mistakes, even <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/travel-advice-biggest-travel-mistakes-2018-10">keeping a running list of the worst mistakes</a> I've made while traveling. A few of the more humorous ones: visiting Mykonos when there were tons of cruise ships in port, getting a migraine after a single whiskey on a long-haul flight, and getting tricked by a tour company that kept changing its name to avoid its poor online reviews.</p><p>There was one mistake I made during my first six months on the road that was not funny at all. Even now, when I think about it, I get a little sick to my stomach.</p><p>It happened innocuously enough. I was editing photos while sitting on a couch in an Airbnb when I shifted a little too much and knocked my external hard drive, a <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TKFEE5S/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_012219_foolproof-photo-backup-system-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B00TKFEE5S&amp;linkId=be6faffbe496c9a3c533ea893b3cb927">Seagate Expansion Portable Hard Drive</a>. The drive dismounted and, rather than keep editing photos, I went off to sleep.</p><p>When I plugged it in two days later, I heard a clicking sound. After trying every online-forum solution possible, I brought it to a data specialist and got the worst news: a head crash, the worst kind of hard drive failure possible. Even if the hard drive had been semi-recoverable, it would have cost me hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to recover the data.</p><p>Thanks to one bad jolt, I lost three months' worth of photos, interviews, and videos. When I found out, I had a full-blown panic attack.</p><p>When I came back to New York two months later, I decided that I needed a foolproof method to back up my data. Here's what I came up with.</p><h2>First, switch to a solid-state drive</h2><p>My first step was to find a reliable and fast external hard drive that I could trust as my primary backup. The best solution these days - though not the most affordable - is a <a href="https://www.storagereview.com/ssd_vs_hdd">solid-state hard drive</a>, or SSD.</p><p>The standard hard drives that most people use are hard disk drives (HDDs). Inside HDDs are spinning platters that store your data. The benefit of an HDD is that it is cheap for a high storage capacity. The downside is that, due to the moving parts on the inside, they are much more prone to failure. </p><p>Studies have shown that SSDs have annual failure rate of less than a tenth of 1%. HDDs can have a <a href="https://www.networkworld.com/article/2873551/data-center/debunking-ssd-myths.html">failure rate as high as 4 to 6%</a>. My hard drive that failed in Israel was a poorly made HDD. One slight shift in movement and the platters spun out of control and crashed. </p><p>The alternative, an SSD, uses integrated circuits to store your data, like a USB memory stick or the memory card in your camera. The benefit of an SSD is that it has no moving parts, making it able to absorb shocks, vibrations, and the occasional drop. SSDs tend to be much more expensive than HDDs, particularly for high storage drives, like what you would need for a backup hard drive or to store lots of photos and videos.</p><p>While SSDs have gone down in price in recent years, they are still considerably more expensive than an HDD, at about 5 cents per GB for HDD and 25 cents per GB for SSD. </p><p>I didn't want to worry so I splurged. I bought a 2 Terabyte Sandisk Extreme SSD <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078T9SZ3K/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_012219_foolproof-photo-backup-system-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B078T9SZ3K&amp;linkId=ce2dcb38ec8f0dc33964b7430e10a81c">for $400 on sale</a>.  I opted for the Sandisk because it is extremely reliable and the size of a business card. I don't take chances.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Back up your data and then back up again</h2><p>The Sandisk Extreme SSD became my first layer of security. All photos, video, and audio interviews are now backed up to this hard drive first.</p><p>But I wasn't satisfied.  This time around, I needed to follow the golden rule of computers: Accept that all hard drives will fail at some point.</p><p>Keeping that in mind, I knew I needed to back up my important data on more than one reliable hard drive, even if I was using an SSD.</p><p>Rather than buy another SSD, which would be prohibitively expensive, I decided to hedge my bets with a HDD from LaCie, a <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2018/08/13/review-lacie-rugged-raid-video/">well-reviewed French hard drive manufacturer</a>. LaCie's Rugged hard drives come encased in an aluminum shell with thick orange bumpers along the edges. They are considered to be <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2018/08/13/review-lacie-rugged-raid-video/">drop, shock, crush, dust, and water resistant</a>.</p><p>At $250 for the 5TB version, it was a little more than half the price of the SanDisk, but with more than double the storage capacity and strong durability. If I end up filling up the SanDisk during this trip, I know I have the additional extra space on the LaCie.</p><p>I began backing up all data on my primary computer and everything on the SanDisk to the LaCie, using <a href="https://www.lacie.com/gb/en/support/software/intego-manager-pro/">Intego Backup Manager</a>, a LaCie software that comes free with the hard drive. It's not the most user-friendly software I've ever used, but its far more customizable than Apple's built-in Time Machine software.</p><p>Now I have everything backed up in two places. That's better than one.</p><h2>The cloud is your safety net</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/537a2c9f6bb3f7b019ea972c-1420/cloud-4.jpg" border="0" alt="cloud" data-mce-source="Flickr/Horia Varlan" data-link="https://www.flickr.com/photos/horiavarlan/4272009397" /><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/horiavarlan/4272009397">Flickr/Horia Varlan</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>I still wasn't satisfied. </p><p>If you are saying to yourself at this point, "This guy is nuts," well, you've never lost three months of information vitally crucial to your livelihood. It's a special kind of hell.</p><p>The final piece of my backup solution was to use a cloud backup service. These days, there <a href="https://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2288745,00.asp">are a lot of good online backup services</a> available for a yearly fee, like Carbonite ($60) or BackBlaze ($50). I have yet to try them out primarily because I'm traveling constantly - and therefore rarely have the steady internet to do full backups online - and because having all my data in the cloud makes me a bit nervous.</p><p>Instead, I decided to utilize the free cloud services I have at my disposal - Apple's iCloud, Google Photos, Google Drive. On all three, I use only the free versions. For iCloud<a href="https://support.apple.com/en-jo/HT204247"> that means 5GB</a>; for <a href="https://www.google.com/drive/">Google Drive, that means 15 GB</a>; and for Google Photos, you have unlimited storage so long as <a href="https://www.extremetech.com/mobile/206990-google-photos-unlimited-storage-for-free-with-a-few-gotchas">you are willing to limit your photo resolution</a>.</p><p>I use iCloud to backup vitally crucial personal documents and files. For Google Drive, I backup work documents and interview audio.</p><p>Finally, I use Google Photos to backup all my photos, which, as a photographer, I have a boatload of. The free photo quality on Google Photos is not high enough that I would be stoked about making professional prints with them, but it is more than enough for displaying photos on the internet. Considering it's my last resort - all the full high-definition versions of my photos are on my two external hard drives - I'm willing to live with that.</p><p>At the end of the day, it's peace of mind that I'm looking for. Having an elaborate, over-the-top backup solution helps me get that.
