India’s electric charging infrastructure is far away from reaching the critical mass. Yet, that is not stopping auto makers from announcing and launching electric cars. The Indian government has set a target to turn 30% of total new vehicle sales electric by 2030.

At the Auto Expo 2020 in Greater Noida, auto makers revealed their plans for upcoming electric vehicles and showcased concept vehicles for the future. Mahindra, MG, Tata and Volkswagen are among the companies that revealed their plans for upcoming electric vehicles in India.

Top upcoming electric cars in India

Mahindra eKUV100

The Mahindra eKUV100 was launched at the Auto Expo 2020 with a price tag of ₹8.25 lakh, making it the most affordable EV in the country. It looks identical to its petrol variant and was first showcased during the Auto Expo 2018.

The eKUV100 is powered by a 40 kW electric motor that can develop 53 bhp and 120Nm of peak torque. It is powered by a 15.9 kWh lithium-ion battery that is claimed to provide a range of 150 km on a single charge.

Mahindra eXUV300 - a long range vehicle

The Mahindra eXUV300 is next in line in the electric vehicle segment from the company and is a tad more premium than the eKUV100. It is built on the existing XUV300 platform and is expected to be available in 2021.

The car was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 in two variants – standard and extended range. It is powered by a 40 kWh battery capable of delivering a 300 km range on a single charge. The battery has been developed by Mahindra Electric in association with LG Chem.

MG Marvel X - the showstopper

The MG Marvel X was the company’s showstopper at the Auto Expo 2020. The company has claimed that it is the world’s first mass produced vehicle with integrated internet, electric, and level-3 autonomous driving capabilities.

It is currently sold as the Roewe Marvel X by the company’s parent SAIC group. It is powered by a 52.5 kWh battery that can be charged in 8.5 hours and a single charge will provide a range of 400 km.

The three motors on the car can develop a combined output of 302hp and 665Nm of peak torque. It has a top speed of 170 kmph and can do 0-100 kmph in 3.1 seconds. The company has not revealed when the car will be launched in India and it will likely depend on how the MG ZS EV performs in the country.

Mahindra Funster Concept - a thrilling roadster

The Mahindra Funster Concept was the highlight of Mahindra at the auto show. It has been designed by its Design Studio in Mumbai. It is a convertible roadster electric vehicle concept that has a top speed of 200 kmph.

As per Mahindra, the Funster is "a thrilling roadster electric concept with a playful convertible mode, nothing short of being an object of desire". It is powered by a 59.1 kWh battery pack with a range of 520 km on a single charge.

Volkswagen ID. Crozz EV concept - twin electric motors

The Volkswagen ID. Crozz EV concept was the only electric car from the German automaker at the Auto Expo 2020. It is powered by twin electric motors that can develop a combined output of 306PS and a peak torque of 320Nm.

As per the company, the ID. Crozz has a top speed of 180 kmph and can do 500 km on a single charge. While the company has not revealed an exact launch date, it is expected to be unveiled in 2021.

Tata Sierra Electric Concept - a legend reborn

The legendary Tata Sierra has been reborn as an electric concept and was the only electric car showcased by Tata Motors at the Auto Expo 2020. The company has kept the details of the car under wraps. The car features a single-piece side glass that runs into the roof, just like the old Sierra.
