Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican who did not support President Donald Trump as her party's presidential nominee in 2016, on Monday said it's unclear whether Trump will be the Republican nominee in 2020.

"It's far too hard to tell now," Collins told MSNBC's Hallie Jackson during an interview in Bangor, Maine, on Monday. "There is a long ways between now and that point."

Collins brought up the fact that she did not vote for Trump in 2016, and instead wrote in House Speaker Paul Ryan's name at the top of the ballot.

"That was very hard for me to do as a life-long Republican," she added.

The senator reiterated her criticism of Trump's response to the violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, earlier this month.

"I think the president failed to meet the standard that we would have expected a president to do in a time like that," Collins said. "There should be no place for hatred, bigotry and racism in this country. And he should have said that very clearly. He did at times, but then he wavered back and forth."
