After 19 years with the San Antonio Spurs, Tim Duncan is retiring from the NBA.
The Spurs announced Duncan's retirement Monday morning, bringing an end to a legendary career.
Duncan had picked up his contract option in July to avoid becoming a free agent. He had the option to return for a 20th season, but ultimately chose to hang up his sneakers.
After being drafted with the first pick by the the Spurs in 1997, Duncan's list of career achievements is incredible.
- Five championships with the Spurs
- 15 All-Star appearances
- 15 All-NBA Team selections
- 15-All Defensive Team selections
- 2 MVP selections
- Rookie of the Year
- 3 NBA Finals MVPs
Duncan totaled more than 26,000 points, 15,000 rebounds, and 3,000 blocks, becoming just the second player aside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to do so in the NBA.
Astonishingly, as the Spurs point out, Duncan had a .710 win percentage in his 19 years with the Spurs - the best win percentage of any player across the NBA, NFL, MLB, or NHL in the last 19 years. Duncan and Gregg Popovich also hold the record for most player-coach wins in NBA history (1,001).
Duncan finishes his career with averages of 19 points per game, 10 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. In his final season, he averaged eight points and seven rebounds per game while helping the Spurs to a franchise-best 67-15 record.
