This Kochi restaurant installed a Public Fridge where people can drop off leftover food for the homeless

Pappada Vada, a restaurant in Kochi’s Kaloor area run by Minu Pauline has ensured that the homeless in the area get the gift of food- and in the process also set an example for restaurants and individuals all across the world.

The restaurant has installed a public fridge right in front of their outlet with the aim of making it a stop for people to ‘donate’ leftover food for the less fortunate.

The fridge which has been christened ‘Nanma Maram’ which roughly translates to Giving Tree will be accessible 24/7 to everyone, allowing people to pay a visit, eat or donate anytime they want. The cost of the fridge and electricity is being borne by Pauline.

One doesn’t necessarily need to eat in Pappada Vada to be able to donate to the fridge. As long as you possess anything that’s neatly wrapped and is worth donating, you can put it in the fridge. Additionally, the restaurant also plans to pre-stock the fridge with 50 food packets from their end daily so as to guarantee every homeless person accessing it has a full stomach.

With more and more people being aware of this initiative, the idea would be to not only get people to donate to the needy, but also instill the value of not wasting food themselves.
