This new WhatsApp feature is something we’ve all wanted

May 25, 2018, 18:49 IST

  • WhatsApp Beta for Android has a new feature to help users manage their photos better.
  • The Media Visibility feature allows users the option to choose whether or not they want WhatsApp media to show up in their phone’s gallery.
  • WhatsApp beta is also implementing revamped ‘contact’ shortcuts.
The constant onslaught of images that are momentarily amusing, embarrassing or just plain spam has been a bane for WhatsApp users everywhere. Which is why it will be a relief to many that Whatsapp is currently testing a feature that will take that whole hassle away. Spotted on WhatsApp Beta for Android, the app will now give users the option to decide whether they want WhatsApp media to show up in their phone’s gallery or not.

The clutter in the main gallery and constantly having to delete pictures that somehow show up again because somebody else thought the same thing was hilarious can truly be a pain. And so, the Media Visibility feature, as the name suggests, lets users hide or show Whatsapp media content so that the clutter is no longer an issue.

It’s simple enough to use. All users have to do is go into their settings and access the ‘data and storage usage’ option. There they’ll find a check-box to select or unselect labelled ‘show media in gallery’. Of course, you have to be on WhatsApp Beta till the mass rollout.

Note that this doesn’t mean that downloaded images won’t be saved altogether. All it means is, that they won’t be shown in the gallery. Users can still access them through any file manager app and by opening the WhatsApp images folder in your File Manager.

Further, WhatsApp has introduced new contact shortcuts as well. Users can choose between just creating a ‘new contact’, or creating a whole ‘new group’.
