Engineering students at Virginia Tech have engineered ECHER. The robot has been designed to support a variety of search-and-rescue and disaster tasks that would typically be unsafe for humans. It can operate a drill, open doors, and climb stairs. The robot can perform many tasks autonomously while still allowing for human interaction in critical areas. It will compete in the DARPA Robotics Challenge Finals this weekend for a chance at winning a $2 million grand prize.
