This futuristic reinvention of the cabinet is completely mesmerizing

Jul 1, 2015, 20:41 IST

New York artist and designer Sebastian ErraZuriz has created a gorgeous new piece of furniture that reimagines the cabinet. The design of the so-called Wave Cabinet was inspired by a paper fan. The cabinet is composed of wooden slats that are all capable of pulling open the cabinet, first spotted on the design blog The Kid Should See This.

But instead of the traditional opening and closing of a door, the Wave Cabinet undulates and rotates to open up at a seam. The roughly 100 wood slats can be bent in a variety of ways that then make the cabinet look like it's made of rolling waves.

"I am inviting people to look at one of the simplest forms of furniture design and to forget that we're talking about furniture, instead to see it as a way of breaking a box," ErraZuriz said about his project on the website. "I love the idea of creating beautiful furniture; nevertheless I am much more interested in using the medium as an excuse to trigger people's curiosity and create a connection with them."The video that ErraZuriz created for the project is also pretty hynotizing.

This is not the first "functional sculpture" that ErraZuriz has created - his website is teaming with other designs, including another cabinet called the Explosion that completely pulls apart to reveal what's inside.
