The Office of National Statistics (ONS) has released the results of a survey on Britain's binge drinking habits - showing that money plays a huge part in the amount of booze we consume.

Categorising respondents by their incomes, the research found that 18% of those on salaries of £40,000 ($56,852) or more drank five times a week - otherwise known as "frequent drinkers" - compared to the 8% of those on less than £10,000 ($14,213).

In total 29 million people admitted to being frequent drinkers, of which 2.5 million said they consumed more than 14 units of alcohol on their heaviest drinking day.

Here's a chart showing the correlation between wages and frequent drinking:

Other wage-related observations in the report included:

  • Four out of five people (78%) earning £40,000 ($56,852) or above said they had drunk alcohol in the last week.
  • Almost three in ten respondents (29%) earning under £10,000 ($14,213) said they were tee-total and never drank at all compared with just 9% of the high-earners.
  • Overall, women said they drank less in the previous week than men, but low-income drinkers were 67% female.

Perhaps surprisingly, young people were less likely to have had alcohol in the last week than their elder counterparts. Wales was reported to have the largest number of heavy drinkers.

The NHS recommends having no more than 14 units of alcohol per week, which is about six glasses of wine or six pints of lager.
