This $650,000 used American supercar has one huge advantage over the Ford GT

The highly-anticipated 2017 Ford GT, soon to be delivered to 250 lucky owners this year, has one problem: it will be made in Canada.

Not that there's anything wrong with Canada, but as was the case with the original Ferrari-beating, Le Mans-winning GT40 (built mostly in England), the great narrative of Henry Ford II and America creating a car that could take on the world will always include that small genealogical hitch.

So what if you wanted a true, red-white-and-blue-blooded American supercar? One with, say, 750 horsepower, a 0-60 time under three seconds, and a 248 mph top speed? What then?

Then you would have to turn to Saleen - the small, Californian company famous for its tuned Mustangs - who in 2000 decided to build a supercar of their own: the vaunted S7.

At an RM Sotheby's auction next month in Detroit, one of the last-ever S7s (of the ultimate, twin-turbocharged edition) will cross the block, and a new owner will claim what is surely the perfect car for the patriotic speed enthusiast.
