Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa passed away on Dec 5 at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai. She died of cardiac arrest.

Jayalalithaa was a favourite among people and fondly known as ‘Amma’. She was sworn in as chief minister for the sixth time on 23 May 2016.

During her tenure, Jayalalithaa announced a string of initiatives for the common man of Tamil Nadu. Jayalalithaa became popular when started ‘amma canteen’, giving idli for Rs 1, making it affordable for everyone in the state.
