The U.S. auto market is hot right now.
According to data compiled by Business Insider and Kelley Blue Book, the automotive research company, more than 8.5 million cars have been sold in the first half of 2018. In total, year-to-date new car sales are up nearly 2% over this time in 2017. Of the top-20 cars sold so far this year, 14 of them have positive sales growth numbers compared to their 2017 statistics.
Crossover SUVs are clearly the vehicles Americans want. According to Kelley Blue Book, over 2.8 million compact or mid-size crossover SUVs have been sold in the first half of 2018 alone, a stunning number that portends big changes for the U.S. auto industry. In the top 20 rankings alone, half were crossover SUVs, with 10 models listed.
The king, of course, is the indomitable Ford F-Series, the best-selling vehicle of any kind in America for the past 35 years. This year, the Ford F-Series outpaced its closest competitor in sales by the tune of 160,000 vehicles sold. To put this difference in perspective, thus far in 2018, the Chevrolet Equinox sold just over 156,000 cars total, good for 9th most in the entire country.
Over the first six months of 2018, three models, in particular, saw substantial increases in sales over the same period last year: Jeep Cherokee is up 39.8%; Toyota Tacoma is up 22.9%; Jeep Wrangler is up 34.9%.
Let's take a look now at the top-20 best-selling cars and trucks so far in 2018.
