They are crucial for maintaining an employee friendly environment, which substantially and directly impacts an employee’s productivity.So, what makes an HR professional better than the rest? BI India lists down a few basic qualities that every HR aspirant must possess to make it big in this sector.

“An HR Manager should have a deep, extensive understanding and knowledge of the HR discipline-- compensation, incentives, safety, retention, training and development among others. There are various issues an HR needs to look into; sometimes it’s a small issue dealing with leaves and sometimes something more complex like harassment at work place, an HR manager needs to be well versed with all laws and regulations that need to be applied during such situations,” says Joseph Devasia, managing director, Antal International India.
He also notes that an HR professional must have extensive knowledge about the industry that his organisation belongs to. It is important as knowledge about the industry will help the HR manager to shortlist and recruit the right kind of talent for the company.

Be a leader
Devasia states that an HR manager must be confident, assertive and optimistic in his approach. He should first understand the company’s goals and then devise the company’s policies that are in sync with the organisation’s objectives. “He will take futuristic steps to see to it that employees are constantly learning and developing their skills. He is never afraid to embrace more experimental approaches and taking intellectual risk for the betterment of an organization & its employees,” he avers.
Be the motivator
One of the most important roles of the HR manager is to constantly motivate the employees to perform better. An HR manager will take initiatives to make office more interesting for the employees and keeps the excitement high among the employees, which in turn is reflected in the performance of the employees.

“If an HR Manager cannot connect with employees or has failed to build a rapport that not a good sign for an HR professional, the employees or the organization. This is the most crucial quality that an HR needs to possess is building relationships, gaining the trust and confidence of employees. Great HR Managers are the ones who have an open door and easily available to employees at the drop of a hat,” adds Devasia. He explains that relationship-building and interpersonal relationship skills are extremely important for an HR manager as it helps him build a rapport with the employees of the company.Lend an active ear
One of the most important qualities of a good HR manager is that he is an active listener. When an employee comes with a particular grievance, the HR is supposed to listen and understand the problem.
“HR managers are facilitators and solution providers and provide guidance for the organizations employees at all levels. Active listening also means having the ability to analyse, interpret, evaluate and come up with a solution for the issue the employee may be facing,” suggests Devasia.
