There's a big change coming to Formula 1 that could save lives
Formula One races are on their way to becoming a lot safer for the drivers behind the wheel.
About a month ago, the Grand Prix Drivers' Association ordered the FIA, which is the sanctioning organization behind Formula One and many other of the world's racing series, to add additional head protection to race cars to help protect the drivers.
This has been a big, ongoing issue.
Helmets aside, from the shoulders up, drivers are basically completely exposed while racing around the track, making them incredibly vulnerable in the case of an accident.
Within the past year alone, two race car drivers, F1's Jules Bianchi and Indycar's Justin Wilson, were killed after suffering from head-related injuries on the track.
But on Wednesday, the FIA said it was working toward reducing these kinds of incidents by rolling out new requirements for race cars competing in the 2017 season.
The change that the FIA is considering would be to use an open canopy-like system that would go over and around the driver's heads.
The FIA has stated that Mercedes-Benz's "halo" design is currently the style of head-protection they would want to implement.
In addition to the canopy, the FIA has also stated that there will be tire-related changes, faster cars, "improvement of [engine] noise," and a Driver of the Day award. Fans watching at home will be able to vote for their favorite drivers.
