- Gita Gopinath is all set to take over the number two position at the IMF from next month.
- It will be the first time ever in the history of the institution that two women would be heading it.
- She was also the first woman globally to occupy the top economist post at the IMF.
India-born economist Gita Gopinath is all set to take over the number two position at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) — an international financial institution based in Washington working with over 190 countries — from next month.
She will be quitting her current role as the Chief Economist at the global financial lender to work as the first deputy managing director (MD), under the guidance of IMF’s serving MD and chairperson
Kristalina Georgieva.
Now, by taking up the second highest position at the IMF, it will be the first time ever in the history of the institution that two women would be heading it.
Georgieva called Gopinath as the ‘right person at the right time’ to take up the leadership role. She further said, “She [Gopinath] displayed intellectual leadership in helping the global economy and the fund to navigate the twists and turns of the worst economic crisis of our lives.”
