Engineering as a profession has proven to be one of the most male-dominated fields across the globe. According to the United Nations, only 14 per cent of the total 280,000 scientists, engineers, and technologists in research development institutions in India are women.

While there has been an evident upsurge in women enrolling in STEM (science technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects, the employability quotient remains unequal. Amongst the few to have successfully gone against the tide and made it big is Jayshree V Ullal.

Indian-origin American billionaire and businesswoman Jayshree V Ullal heads Arista Networks - a software-driven cloud networking company located in Santa Clara.

Born in the United Kingdom and raised in New Delhi, India, Ullal is one of America's wealthiest female executives.

The self-made billionaire has studied electrical engineering at San Francisco State University and engineering management at Santa Clara University.

As one of the primary members of Arista, Ullal joined the company when the team had a strength of just 50 employees.

Currently, Ullal owns about 5 per cent of Arista's stock, some of which is earmarked for her two children, niece, and nephew.

The engineer-turned entrepreneur has a current net worth of $1.8 billion and ranks 15th on the Forbes list for ‘America’s Richest self-made Women’.
