Vicky Kaushal, Rishabh Pant, and Abhinandan Varthaman among the top 10 personalities that Indians googled this year

Wrapping up 2019, search engine giant Google has released a recap sequence of the most searched trends on its platform across India. It announced the ‘Year in Search’ results for categories like personalities, news, sports and more.

From Cricket World Cup and Lok Sabha Elections to Chandrayaan 2, the report shows the extent of excitement and dedication Indians have for national events.

Vicky Kaushal, Rishabh Pant, and Abhinandan Varthaman were the top searched personalities this year. While Ranu Mondal — the viral singing sensation who broke out with Ek pyaar ka nagma hai— was the new entrant featured on the list.

Here is the list of top Indian personalities on Google search this year:


1. Abhinandan Varthaman

Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman tops the charts for the most searched personality on google after he shot down a Pakistani aircraft F-16 close to the Line of Control (LoC). Soon after, he was captured by Pakistan’s security forces. However, the searches grew as the entire country was glued to the news of Varthaman returning to India after almost three days.

2. Lata Mangeshkar

Singer Lata Mangeshkar made it to the second spot in the most searched category after she was searched aggressively, following the rumours of her death. The 90-year-old singer was hospitalised in November due to pneumonia. Later, her niece Rachana dismissed the fake news saying that Mangeshkar was fine.


The Indian government celebrated the melody queen’s 90th birthday by bestowing a special honour — ‘Daughter Of The Nation’.

3. Yuvraj Singh

After 17 years of dedication, Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh announced his retirement from International cricket on June 10, 2019. He was the top trend, the following week when his friends, fans and other cricketers took to twitter to show their discontentment with Yuvraj’s move. He kept the buzz alive hinting at his displeasure with the management that forced him out of international cricket.

4. Anand Kumar

Renowned educationist and founder of Super 30, Anand Kumar was among the top search trends after the release of Hrithik Roshan Starrer Super 30 in July. The movie narrates the life of the mathematician who coached underprivileged students for IIT entrances.


The movie crossed ₹100 crore-mark on day 11 of its release.

5. Vicky Kaushal

Hrithik Roshan may have bagged the tag of the sexiest Asian man in British News Weekly Eastern Eye but Vicky Kaushal emerged as a force to reckon with in Bollywood, and in the top 5 personalities popular on Google.


After a series of hits — Lust Stories, Sanju and Manmarziyaan — actor Vicky Kaushal had an impressive start to the year with the release of Uri: The Surgical Strike in January 2019. The film got appreciation from every corner of the country. In fact, during the budget session in February, the stand-in Finance Minister Piyush Goyal took time in the middle of his speech to praise the blockbuster movie.

The actor was later rewarded with the Best Actor National Award.

6. Rishabh Pant

Wicket keeper Rishabh Pant emerged as the top searched personality during July. While the 22-year old’s career took a turn for the worse, the high expectations and buzz he generated ahead of T-20 internationals kept him among the top 10 Google searches this year.

7. Ranu Mondal

Viral singing sensation Ranu Mondal had a love-hate relationship with the internet and social media. Her song Ek pyaar ka nagma hai went viral across social media platforms after a man noticed and recorded her at the railway station and shared the video on Facebook.


Soon after, she was recognised by Singer Himesh Reshammiya, who offered her to sing for his film Happy Hardy and Heer. The overnight fame made her one of the most looked for people on Google.

8. Taara Sutaria

Indian actress Tara Sutaria, who forayed in the industry as a child artist in 2010 made her Bollywood debut with Student Of The Year 2 in May. Ever since, the 24-years-old young actress had been on the headlines for being romantically associated with Siddarth Malhotra. The rumour mill kept her counter ticking on Google.

9. Siddharth Shukla

Model and television actor Siddharth Shukla has been on the search list after he was selected to appear on reality show Big Boss 13. He was in controversy because of his aggressive and abrupt behaviour. However, it aggravated after host Salman Khan supported him for his conduct.

10. Koena Mitra

Bollywood actress Koena Mitra revived her career as well as public interest in her life after she appeared on the reality TV show Big Boss 13. The number of people Googling Mitra shot up again in July after she went through six months imprisonment for a bounced cheque.
