It is a truth universally acknowledged that you will be excited when you discover a dress has pockets.

Whether it's the thrill of having somewhere to store your phone, the comfort in knowing that you won't have to go rifling through your purse for your lipgloss every time you need to touch up your makeup, or the relief in having an alternative option to posing with your hands on your hips, pockets can take a dress to the next level and become a favorite feature for the person wearing it.

But as Justin Alexander Warshaw, the CEO and creative director of the Justin Alexander Group, told Insider, you may not want to get a wedding dress with pockets if you like them too much.

"The irony of it is it could be good and it could be bad," Warshaw said about buying a wedding dress with pockets, adding that some people often use theirs nonstop, which could be a problem on your wedding day.

Warshaw said brides who hyperfocus on pockets may find themselves stuffing their hands into them all night, leaving them with an album full of wedding photos where their hands are hidden.

"For those brides, we often say you might want to close your pockets," he added.

However, Warshaw noted that he does think pockets on wedding dresses can be both useful and fun for some people.

"It's a fun little element where brides can keep a couple of their personal items, or it's fun for styling to have that pocket for some of the photos," he said.

But Warshaw doesn't want brides to rely on them throughout their wedding, as they should shine in their photos, not one feature of their gown.

For instance, the Nalani gown from his latest collection with Justin Alexander Signature has pockets, but if a bride only highlighted them in her photos, the slit and architectural neckline may be overlooked in her wedding pictures.

Likewise, you'll probably want to show off your wedding ring in your photos and throughout your big day, and if your hands are in your pockets, that ring won't be visible.

"It can become a bad thing," Warshaw said. "I want brides to keep that in mind."

"If you find yourself putting your hands in your pockets too much in every photo, pinch yourself," he added.

And focus on finding a wedding dress that makes you comfortable, whether it has pockets or not.
