  • Witnesses told CBSN LA that a boy became disruptive about an hour into an American Airlines flight.
  • They said the boy became physical with his mother and tried to kick out a window.
  • A video shows passengers helping to restrain the boy as a staff member approached with duct tape.

A video obtained by CBSN Los Angeles appears to show a 13-year-old boy being duct taped to his seat on an American Airlines flight.

Witnesses told the news station that the boy had become physical toward his mother about an hour into the flight from Maui to Los Angeles. They said the boy also tried to kick out a window on the aircraft.

In a video clip published by CBSN Los Angeles, an airline staff member can be seen approaching the boy with duct tape as two to three passengers appeared to restrain him.

The flight took off from the Hawaiian island of Maui on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. local time and was scheduled to land in Los Angeles five hours later. Instead, it was diverted to Hawaii's capital, Honolulu.

The boy was taken into custody in Honolulu, CBSN Los Angeles reported, adding that no one was injured.

"Customers were reaccommodated on other flights or provided hotel accommodations," an American Airlines representative said. "Safety and security is our top priority, and we apologize to our customers for any inconvenience this caused."

The plane landed in Honolulu at 3:47 p.m. local time, the person said, adding that the flight was diverted "due to an incident with a passenger on board."

This wouldn't be airline staff members' first time using duct tape to prevent unruly behavior.

Staff duct taped a passenger to his seat on a Frontier Airlines flight to Miami in July. The man, who was caught on video throwing a punch at a flight attendant and screaming obscenities, was also accused of inappropriately touching female crew members and removing his shirt.

Also in July, a TikTok video showed a woman duct taped to her seat on an American Airlines flight. The airline said she had tried to exit the plane during the flight and attacked flight attendants.

On Thursday, the Federal Aviation Administration said it had investigated more than 600 reports of unruly passenger behavior in 2021 - nearly double the combined number of incidents in 2019 and 2020.
