White gowns were popular at the Oscars this weekend, but none were as daring as the one worn by Viola Davis.

The actress walked the red carpet on Sunday in a sleeveless dress custom-made for her by Alexander McQueen. The bodice of Davis' dress was covered in floral cutouts that created a see-through effect and led to crisscross-style straps. Her skirt, on the other hand, was made from chiffon and reached the floor.

She completed her look with dangling diamond earrings, a curly updo hairstyle, smokey eye makeup, sparkling bracelets, and dark nail polish. Davis also carried a white clutch that was embellished with crystals.

Davis' white gown is a departure from the brighter looks she's sported for awards shows held earlier this year.

At the SAG Awards, for example, the actress wore a neon-green dress with metallic embellishments. Davis also wore bright pink makeup with the ensemble.

Davis, who is usually styled by Elizabeth Stewart, also wore a vibrant look for the NAACP Awards in March. Her sleeveless gown that night had a scoop-style neckline, peplum bodice, and a magenta, orange, and blue floral print.

Davis is nominated in this year's best actress in a leading role category for her role in "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom." The nod marks her fourth nomination, making her the most-nominated black actress in Oscars history.

Representatives for Alexander McQueen did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
