Video shows an Air India jet stuck under a bridge on a Delhi highway

Video footage showing an Air India jet stuck under a bridge on a New Delhi highway has been widely shared online.

A journalist for Indian news agency ANI News shared the footage on Twitter Sunday, showing the massive aircraft seemingly wedged tight almost exactly halfway under a bridge, as traffic streams past.

But it wasn't the result of a low-flying aircraft. The plane, the journalist Ashoke Raj noted, was not in service at the time:

The plane got stuck under a footbridge as it was transported on the the Delhi-Gurugram highway, not far from Indira Gandhi International Airport in the country's capital, according to The Times of India.

Both Raj and the newspaper shared a statement from Air India saying that the plane had been decommissioned and sold at the time of the accident.

"This is an old, scrapped aircraft which has already been sold off by us," an Air India spokesperson told the paper. "There is no additional information as it involves the person to whom it has been sold off."

The plane had been picked up on Saturday by the buyer, Air India told Raj. Insider was unable to establish if the road has now been cleared.

A similar incident took place in December 2019, according to India Today, which reported that an India Post aircraft being transported by truck got stuck under a bridge in West Bengal.
