The husband of Alexis Sharkey, a Houston influencer who was killed in a homicide last year, has been found dead in an apparent suicide, officials say.

The US Marshals Service told NBC News on Wednesday that Tom Sharkey was found dead in an apparent suicide in a residence in Fort Myers, Florida. A Houston police spokesperson said in a press conference on Wednesday that Sharkey shot himself as authorities attempted to take him into custody.

An investigation into Alexis' death determined that Tom was the "only person who had the means, motive, and opportunity to have committed the murder," the police spokesperson said. The spokesperson added that the investigation found that the couple had a "history of domestic violence," that their relationship was ending, pending divorce, and Tom had not been truthful in communications with police.

No other individuals are currently under investigation or suspected of involvement in the case, as the department has "clear evidence that Mr. Sharkey acted alone," the spokesperson said.

Alexis, also known by her maiden name Alexis Robinault, was found dead on November 28, 2020, by a sanitation worker who discovered her naked on the side of the road in Houston. In January, her death was ruled a homicide by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. A representative for the institute confirmed to Insider at the time that she had died of strangulation.

Her husband, Tom, reportedly told ABC 13 in the week after her death that he had identified her body for investigators and said that he was receiving "death threats" in the wake of her death. According to the outlet, Tom said in that interview that when he last saw his wife, he "told her she couldn't drive under the influence."

Alexis' mother, Stacey Robinault, told Insider in December 2020 that she believed her daughter had been murdered.

"It just drives deep into the soul that something very malicious happened here, and I want to get to the bottom of it," Robinault said. The death had not yet been ruled a homicide at the time.

Houston Police said that an arrest warrant for Tom Sharkey was issued on September 29, with the intent to charge him with Alexis' murder upon arrest

According to the police spokesperson, the department issued a warrant for Tom's arrest on September 29 and intended to fully charge him in Harris County with Alexis' murder upon arrest.

A U.S. Marshals task force located Tom at a residence in Fort Myers, Florida on Tuesday night, according to the press conference. Tom reportedly ran upstairs and shot himself with a firearm after learning that law enforcement was at the residence for him. Sharkey and his family were not made aware of the warrant until that night, the spokesperson said.

An influencer who also worked as a contractor for Monat, a hair and skincare brand that uses multilevel marketing (MLM) techniques, Alexis had approximately 20,000 followers on Instagram at the time of her death. Her account, which has remained inactive since November 2020, currently has over 87,000 followers.
