- John Lautner's modernist masterpiece in LA just hit the market for $16 million.
- It is a gravity-defying structure that has 60-foot caissons suspending it above the canyon.
John Lautner's 'Garcia House' is a 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom architectural masterpiece located in Los Angeles.
The house, which is listed with agent Aaron Kirman at AKG, appears almost like a half-moon rising above the landscape.
Architecture firm Marmol Radziner, which specializes in restoring midcentury modern homes, renovated the home in 2003. The preservation project included adding stained walnut cabinetry and a sliding glass door that opens up the living room.
The home was originally designed for composer Russell Garcia and his wife Gina, according to Vogue Australia. Garcia is known for composing soundtracks for movies such as The Jersey Boys, as well as the theme songs he wrote for TV shows like Rawhide and CBS Reports.
It was purchased by Bill Damaschke, a former executive at DreamWorks, and John McIlwee, an entertainment business manager, in 2002 for about $1.2 million, Mansion Global reported.
Ron Radziner, one of the principal architects at Marmol Radziner, told the Los Angeles Times Magazine in 2018 that the firm's goal was to make the home "liveable for the next two hunderd years" to avoid having the house torn down. It took the firm about 12 months to fully preserve the home.
"Our goal was never to do a slavish restoration, but to create something that maintained the spirit of Lautner's work and also made sense for the 21st century," Radziner told the magazine.
Garcia House is also known as 'Rainbow House' because of its iconic curved roof and multicolored windows in the living room.
This sepia-toned window changes the perspective of the exterior landscape.
The home also includes original terrazzo flooring and lava rock in the entryway.
The living room includes a working fireplace and sliding glass doors that open up to the garden below.
The living and eating areas are all connected under the curved roof, and both parts of the home have incredible views of the canyon.
The back terrace of the Garcia house includes a small cactus garden and a curved staircase.
Each bedroom includes its own stunning view.
The library includes a large built-in bookcase and large windows for natural lighting.
The home also includes a verdant garden that was designed by landscape architect John Sharp, as detailed in the listing notes.
The newest addition to the home is an almond-shaped pool that was added in 2008 and mirrors the home's facade.
