Abandoned places have a way of sending chills up your spine. From empty prison cells to mysterious nuclear laboratories, the US is full of fascinating, slightly unnerving places whose empty halls echo with the stories of past occupants.

ALABAMA: The town of Prattville still exists today, but many of the old factories and mills in the area are abandoned and full of rusty, silent machinery.

ALASKA: The mining town of Kennecott became a ghost town when its supply of copper ran out.

ARIZONA: The Vulture Mine was founded in 1863, but shut down in 1942, when processing gold was a violation due to the need for resources during World War II.

ARKANSAS: Dogpatch USA, a theme park based on the comic strip "Li'l Abner," operated from 1968 until 1980, when the comic's creator Al Capp passed away.
