Tesla has delayed its Cybertruck electric pickup truck.

As first reported by Electrek, Tesla's web page for the Cybertruck now says customers will be able to customize their order "as production nears in 2022."

The Cybertruck was originally supposed to start shipping this year - but the delay isn't a complete surprise. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said during the company's fourth-quarter earnings call in January that the first Cybertrucks would ship in 2021 only "if we get lucky."

"But I expect volume production to be in 2022," he added.

Musk said in 2020 that Tesla needed to build all-new manufacturing equipment to make the truck's hard outer casing, making delays a possibility.

In July, the Tesla billionaire said in a tweet that he didn't care whether the Cybertruck sold well.

"To be frank, there is always some chance that Cybertruck will flop, because it is so unlike anything else," he said. "I don't care. I love it so much even if others don't."

He also said there had been only a few design changes since the truck was unveiled in November 2019, including that the truck wouldn't have any door handles.

Tesla did not immediately respond when Insider contacted it about the Cybertruck delay.
