All eyes have been on Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith in the lead-up to the publication of Pinkett Smith's memoir "Worthy."
The book has yet to be released, but Pinkett Smith has already revealed intimate details about her relationship with Smith while promoting it. In an interview with "Today" show host Hoda Kotb, which aired Friday, Pinkett Smith said that she and the actor have been living "completely separate lives" since 2016.
The couple have publicly shared the ups and downs of their marriage for years now, but their relationship didn't always look tumultuous from the outside.
Pinkett Smith and Smith started dating in 1995, making their red-carpet debut in September of that year and quickly becoming a Hollywood it-couple. They tied the knot in 1997, donning matching designer outfits for the occasion.
Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith wore coordinating outfits to their wedding
On their wedding day, December 31, 1997, Pinkett Smith and Smith looked every bit the picture-perfect Hollywood couple.
The wedding was held at the Cloisters Mansion outside of Baltimore.
The bride and groom both wore all-white outfits designed by Badgley Mischka to the nuptials, as People reported at the time.
Pinkett Smith's dress had a high neckline and long sleeves, fitting the vibe of the winter affair. The gown was made of silk velvet, which gave it a textured look. She paired it with simple, pearl earrings.
Smith's suit coordinated with his wife's ensemble, and he wore a white ascot instead of a traditional tie.
But despite their appearances, Pinkett Smith has previously shared that she was miserable on her wedding day.
Pinkett Smith revealed in 2018 that she never wanted to get married
Discussing the wedding on a 2018 episode of "Red Table Talk," Pinkett Smith said the nuptials were "horrible," both because she was three months pregnant with her and Smith's son Jaden and because she had never been interested in getting married.
"My first trimester was horrible," she said. "And I was so upset that I had to have a wedding. I was so pissed. I went crying down the freakin' aisle."
Pinkett Smith went on to say on the episode that she "never really agreed with the construct" of marriage.
"I just don't agree with it. I never have. I still don't," she added. "Till death do us part is real for me. It's just all of the rules for me."
In her interview with Kotb, Pinkett Smith said she and Smith decided to "live separately" in 2016 because they "were just exhausted with trying."
"I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be," she said, adding that she and Smith do not intend to get divorced.
During a separate interview for the "Let's Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa" podcast, which will be released Wednesday, Pinkett Smith said she wanted to announce the separation on "Red Table Talk" in 2020, but Smith wasn't ready.
In 2017, Smith shared a photo of himself and his wife on their wedding day for their 20th anniversary on Instagram, though they were separated at the time, according to Pinkett Smith.
"Love is Like Gardening... I have learned to focus on HELPING you to BLOSSOM into what YOU want to be (into what you were born to be)... Rather than Demanding that you become what my Fragile Ego needs you to be," Smith captioned the post. "I've learned to take pleasure in Nourishing YOUR dreams... Rather than wrestling with you to Fulfill my Selfish Needs & Satiate My Insecurities."
On Sunday, Smith posted a video of himself on a boat with the caption "Notifications off :)," indicating he wouldn't be accessible by phone for the foreseeable future.
