A car-aircraft hybrid, which can transform from a sports car into an aircraft in less than three minutes, is now certified to fly in Slovakia.

A team of up to eight people has been working on the prototype since 2017, according to Klein Vision cofounder, Anton Zajac, together clocking up around 100,000 hours of work.

The AirCar completed its first inter-city flight in June last year, flying from the international airport in Nitra, Slovakia, to the international airport in Bratislava, Slovakia. The flight took a total of 35 minutes.

After arrival, the AirCar then transformed into a sports car and was driven by Zajac, alongside the AirCar's inventor, Professor Stefan Klein, to downtown Bratislava.

The AirCar is not restricted to airfields. It can take off from and land anywhere so long as the owner of the property gives permission, according to Zajac.

The current model can travel up to 370 miles, cruising at 140 miles per hour. According to Zajac, a new production model will have a range of around 630 miles.

The dual-mode vehicle is also equipped with a ballistic parachute in case of an emergency incident or engine failure.

The models weighs 1,100 kilograms and can hold two people. Zajac told Insider that the company plans to introduce a three-seat model, as well as an amphibious version.

According to Zajac, the certification is a "huge milestone," not only in bringing forward a flying car that meets European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulations, but also in setting the stage for the mass production of dual-model vehicles.

The AirCar has an EASA compatible certificate, meaning it can fly in any country in the European Union, with approval from local authorities. Zajac told Insider that the company is also currently applying for approval from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

"We are planning to introduce an AirCar taxi service," Zajac told Insider, adding that the company hopes to encourage around 5% of the private owners of the US' 220,000 small planes to switch to the AirCar.

Depending on factors like avionics - the electronic flight control systems fitted in an aircraft - it will cost anywhere between $500,000 and $1 million to purchase the AirCar.
