Still thinking about Taylor Swift's daring blue bodysuit and garter? That's intentional, a fashion psychologist says
- Taylor Swift wore dozens of standout outfits while performing on her Eras Tour this year.
- Her sparkling blue bodysuits and matching garters were some of her most memorable outfits.
Anyone who attended Taylor Swift's Eras Tour could confirm that the musician can indeed "make the whole place shimmer."
Her massive stage sparkled with moving images each night, audiences wore glowing bracelets that matched the music, and her sheer talent kept Swifties in awe.
But we also can't forget about Swift's outfits. She wore dozens of different costumes throughout the first leg of her tour, including form-fitting bodysuits and showstopping ball gowns.
There was also a set of blue bodysuits — ones that hugged her body, dazzled in the light, and were accompanied most nights by a shimmering garter. Swift wore the garments while performing songs from her latest album "Midnights" to end each show.
And there might be a psychological reason for why she closed her concerts with her most daring looks, according to Carolyn Mair, a chartered psychologist, fashion-business consultant, and the author of "The Psychology of Fashion."
Taylor Swift's most memorable Eras Tour outfits
Fashion house Oscar de la Renta designed one of Swift's original blue bodysuits over the course of 315 hours.
It was custom-made for the musician to be sleeveless with a sweetheart neckline, and it was covered in 5,300 hand-embroidered crystals and beads.
Zuhair Murad created another custom bodysuit for Swift that looked almost identical to the former.
An Instagram post from the fashion brand said the piece took slightly longer to make (350 hours) and was covered in more than 20,000 sequins, crystals, and beads.
Murad then created a third and final frock for Swift, which was the most daring bodysuit of the set. It had a high neckline, beaded fringe, and bedazzled cutouts.
Swift's blue bodysuits: sparkly and unforgettable
When asked about these specific Eras Tour outfits, Mair was quick to point out the beaded fringe that lined each bodysuit.
"Fringes on clothing attract attention because they move when we move, and our vision is drawn to movement," she said. "In addition, the sparkles catch the light, and this is also attention-grabbing for our visual system."
Of course, there's also the midnight-blue coloring of each outfit that "aligns with the theme" of the musical set, she said, and the form-fitting cuts that Mair described as "simply stunning."
Still, she noted that it's the garter that "adds extra interest."
"A garter can evoke feelings of empowerment and body positivity for the wearer, and often symbolizes sensuality, intimacy, and a romantic commitment," Mair said. "This elevates the outfit beyond the obvious glamour of the bodysuit alone."
The sensual outfit goes hand in hand with one of Swift's boldest, steamiest performances to date: her live version of "Vigilante Shit," during which Swift dances across a chair.
As for why Swift wore the bodysuits at the end of each show — and donned a third version of the garment to conclude the tour's first leg — Mair said Swift could have been saving the best for last in a strategic way.
"In psychology, there is a heuristic called the peak-end rule," she said. "It suggests that we tend to judge and remember an experience based on the emotional peaks and how it ends, rather than considering the experience as a whole."
If Mair is right, then Swift's fashion strategy has seemingly worked.
Fans have made their own versions of the bodysuits at home, raved about the look in TikTok videos, and even created fan-made merchandise inspired by the garments.
And if we're judging by their reactions alone, then it's safe to say the bodysuits have essentially become the signature wardrobe piece of the Eras Tour, and one of Swift's most impactful, memorable outfits to date.
