Spirit Airlines is expanding its network with 7 new routes from Philadelphia to the Caribbean and across the US
  • Spirit Airlines is targeting Philadelphia with seven new routes in its latest network expansion.
  • The carrier will focus on vacation destinations in the Caribbean and across the US, including two all-new routes.

Philadelphia residents will have more options come 2022 as Miramar-based Spirit Airlines brings new routes and frequencies to the Pennsylvania city.

On Tuesday, Spirit Airlines announced seven new routes from Philly, targeting leisure destinations in the Caribbean and across the US. Two of the new routes, including Oakland, California, and Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, are currently unserved markets. According to Spirit, these connections will save customers time avoiding connections or commuting from a major airport, like San Juan in Puerto Rico or San Francisco, which is about half an hour from Oakland.

"This is wonderful news for PHL, our passengers, and our region," Philadelphia International Airport CEO Chellie Cameron said in a press release. "In addition to offering more options to popular vacation destinations, Spirit will be the only airline at PHL serving Oakland and Aguadilla nonstop. This is especially important for our passengers wanting to visit friends and relatives."

Since the travel boom started over the summer, Spirit has been rapidly expanding its services out of cities like Miami and Orlando, but now it is going head-to-head with American Airlines in Philly, which is the city's biggest operator, according to the airport. The new routes will increase Spirit's network to 20 destinations out of the city, marking a steady growth since the carrier entered the market in 2013.

In addition to the two new routes, Spirit is also expanding its service in the Caribbean, which it already serves from a number of cities, like Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Orlando, and New York, according to the carrier's route map. The focus on sunny destinations comes as travelers seek getaways during the winter season.

Spirit also announced it is increasing its frequency to Cancun in April, upping its service from thrice-weekly to daily.
