Jo Koy's meme-worthy Golden Globes monologue made him the punchline on social media — for all the wrong reasons
- Stand-up comedian Jo Koy hosted the 81st Golden Globe Awards on Saturday.
- Koy's jokes about Taylor Swift and the "Barbie" movie landed flat both on and offline.
Stand-up comedian Jo Koy hosted the 81st Golden Globe Awards on Saturday, but the internet was less than impressed with his material, which quickly inspired a series of memes.
During his opening monologue, Koy ripped into the three-hour run time of the movie "Oppenheimer" and made a series of jokes about Greta Gerwig's "Barbie," which he said was based "on a plastic doll with big boobies."
"The key moment in 'Barbie' is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite, and flat feet — or what casting directors call 'character actor,'" Koy continued.
The camera panned to the audience, focusing on the actors and directors involved in each production who reacted with what appeared to be strained smiles and little laughter.
Online viewers appeared just as unimpressed. Many X users hit back at Koy's remarks, dubbing his performance "awful" and "unfunny," and suggesting he had bombed as this year's host.
In one viral post, a user celebrated Koy's online downfall with a clip taken from "Barbie," in which the titular character, played by Margot Robbie, smiled and danced.
Another compared Koy's performance to a scene from the 2019 movie "Joker," in which the lead character delivered material on stage to awkward silence from the crowd.
Later in the evening, Koy turned his attention to Taylor Swift and her relationship with Travis Kelce.
Koy joked that there were more camera shots of Swift at an NFL game than there were at the awards ceremony, before the broadcast showed a stoney-faced Swift sipping a drink in the audience.
Multiple X users shared various memes that predicted how Koy would react when he stepped off the stage and realized how badly things had gone, both in-person and online.
"Jo Koy escaping the #GoldenGlobes to avoid seeing Taylor Swift or anyone in that audience after the show," one X user wrote, alongside a GIF of a man jumping through a glass window.
"Jo Koy checking his Twitter before bed," another user wrote alongside a short clip from the TV show "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" that zooms in on Danny DeVito's face looking shocked and emotional. The shot has become known as the "I Get It Now" meme, which is used to indicate someone has gained a sudden and intense understanding of a situation.
Koy was announced as this year's host on December 21, less than a month before the event. Koy referenced his own lack of preparation on stage, as he appeared to realize in real-time that his jokes weren't landing.
"I got the gig 10 days ago, you want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up," he said during his performance.
Koy's clangers weren't the only meme-worthy moment of the night either.
A pop culture account re-posted a clip from the event which showed Selena Gomez speaking with Swift, who reacted with a shocked expression.
The clip had no discernible audio, but the user speculated in their post that Gomez had told Swift she had asked Timothée Chalamet for a picture, but his partner Kylie Jenner had refused it.
The post went mega-viral with 32 million views, as users transformed the clip into a new meme format in which they added their own interpretations of the conversation, and joked the duo were really discussing the nuances of football or their fast food order.
