JetBlue and American are launching 24 new routes as the two airlines expand their partnership

• JetBlue Airways and American Airlines are expanding their "Northeast Alliance."
• JetBlue is adding flights to seven new cities and launching 17 new routes from New York and Boston.
• American will add seven new routes, including a non-stop flight between New York and India.

JetBlue Airways and American Airlines are once again expanding their partnership in what they call the "Northeast Alliance" with new routes and expanded connectivity options for customers.

Both airlines are planning for major growth in New York and Boston by adding flights to both cities, venturing into new territory, and cooperating on more routes.

"By connecting with American's large customer base and international network, we can add new markets that we have been eying for many years," Scott Laurence, JetBlue's head of revenue and planning, said in a statement. "The alliance quite literally gives us room to grow as we get greater access to airports that we've been locked out of for years."

American now has partnerships with both of the country's mid-tier airlines with JetBlue on the East Coast and Alaska Airlines on the West Coast. JetBlue and American first announced the first phase of the partnership in February, having been given a tacit green light by the US Department of Transportation earlier this year.

New Routes from New York and Boston

JetBlue will add seven new cities to its route network starting in October and give new routes to six cities with existing flights. This expansion focuses solely on routes from airports in New York and Boston.

From New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, JetBlue will add flights to:

• San Antonio, Texas, starting in October.
• San Pedro Sula, Honduras, starting in December 2021.
• Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, starting in the first quarter of 2022.
• Kansas City, Missouri, starting in the second quarter of 2022.
• Milwaukee, Wisconsin, starting in the second quarter of 2022.
• Vancouver, Canada, starting in summer 2022.

From New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, American will add flights to:

• Delhi, India, starting October 31.

American had previously added flights to new international destinations including Bogota, Colombia; Santiago, Chile; Tel Aviv, Israel; and Athens, Greece, among others, which JetBlue flyers can now access.

And from nearby LaGuardia Airport, JetBlue will triple the number of flights it offered in 2019 with a six-city route expansion aimed primarily at the southeast. Another route will also be added to Portland, Maine, where JetBlue flights were scaled back in 2019.

From New York's LaGuardia Airport, JetBlue will add flights to:

• Jacksonville, Florida, starting in October.
• Sarasota, Florida, starting in October.
• Savannah, Georgia, starting in October.
• New Orleans, Louisiana, starting in the first quarter of 2022.
• Nashville, Tennessee, starting in the second quarter of 2022.
• Portland, Maine, starting in the summer of 2022.

JetBlue's LaGuardia-Boston shuttle route will see as many as 15 daily flights in 2022. Existing flights from LaGuardia to Charleston, South Carolina; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Orlando, Florida; West Palm Beach, Florida; Fort Myers, Florida; and Tampa, Florida will also see more daily flights.

From New York's LaGuardia Airport, American will add flights to:

• Houston, Texas, no set start date.
• Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, no set start date.
• Omaha, Nebraska, no set start date.

From Boston Logan International Airport, JetBlue will add flights to:

• San Antonio, Texas, starting in October.
• Kansas City, Missouri, starting in the second quarter of 2022.
• Milwaukee, Wisconsin, starting in the second quarter of 2022.
• Vancouver, Canada, starting in summer 2022 with seasonal service.
• Asheville, North Carolina, starting in summer 2022 with seasonal service.

American has also committed to growing routes from Boston, where it maintains a large presence even though it doesn't consider the city a hub.

From Boston Logan International Airport, American will add flights to:

• Toronto, Canada, no set start date.
• St. Louis, Missouri, no set start date.
• Cincinnati, Ohio, no set start date.

American will also add one of its most luxurious domestic aircraft, the Airbus A321T, to the Boston-Los Angeles route.

JetBlue flight numbers will be given to more than 30 American routes starting May 3, bringing the total number of codeshare routes above 40. The strategy allows JetBlue flyers to book more single-ticket itineraries and book more American flights from the JetBlue website.

The first flights to the Great White North

JetBlue flies to more than 20 countries but is finally making its first foray into the one closest to home, Canada. Flights to Vancouver from New York and Boston are scheduled for next summer when the US-Canada border will likely be open for tourism.

"As we move through the pandemic and prepare for a safe and healthy return to non-essential travel, this new service, scheduled for Summer 2022, gives us all something to look forward to," Tamara Vrooman, president and CEO of the Vancouver Airport Authority, said in a statement.

Vancouver is currently unserved from JFK, following the departure of Cathay Pacific Airways from the route in 2020, a decision announced before the pandemic. But JetBlue will still have competition in Air Canada, which offers non-stop flights to Vancouver from Boston and Newark.

"By selecting YVR, JetBlue has signaled a vote of confidence in our region as a premier destination, and our airport as a trusted partner, that together will attract a mix of business and leisure travelers when the time is right to fly again," Vrooman said.

More connectivity at New York's largest airport

A new post-security shuttle will soon connect JetBlue and American at JFK, linking Terminals 5 and 8 for the first time. Passengers arriving in one terminal and departing from another can avoid the AirTrain and having to go through security again when making connections.

Checked baggage will be automatically transferred for flyers with single-ticket itineraries on American and JetBlue.

The terminal link also opens up American's airline lounges to JetBlue passengers. Eligible passengers, including Admirals Club members, can go through security in Terminal 8 and then take the shuttle over to the lounge-deprived Terminal 5 when it's time for their flight. Terminal 8 is also home to Bobby Van's Grill & Steakhouse, a Priority Pass restaurant that its members use.

JetBlue flyers connecting to other Terminal 8 airlines including Qatar Airways, British Airways, Finnair, and Cathay Pacific, to name a few, will also enjoy the smoother transfers.
