James Cameron's $33 million eco-friendly estate helped inspire the blockbuster Avatar franchise. Take a look inside.

  • Director James Cameron is selling his more than 100-acre 5-bedroom, 7-bath oceanfront estate.
  • The home is in Hollister Ranch, a coastal subdivision where singer Jackson Browne has also lived.

For $33 million, you can live in the home that inspired Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron as he developed the hit blockbuster film Avatar.

Located on the Gaviota Coast of Santa Barbara County, the sprawling 8,000-square-foot California estate has been listed by Village Properties/Forbes Global Properties, in partnership with Jeff Kruthers of Hollister Ranch Realty, the Wall Street Journal reported. It The boasts five-bedrooms and seven-bathrooms, and amenities including executive offices, an athletic room, a lagoon-style pool, and a roughly 24,000-square-foot equestrian barn.

The mostly solar- and wind-powered estate sits in Hollister Ranch, a secluded coastal subdivision that restricts residential development to help preserve the area's wildlife and native vegetation. According to a history of the area published by the Hollister Ranch Conservancy, the property "represents a concept of land development that is a model for both landowners and environmentalists."

Cameron and his wife, Suzy Amis Cameron, purchased the property in the late 1990s for $4.375 million, WSJ writer Katherine Clarke found. The upstairs bedroom — which has direct views to the ocean and its sea life — was an inspiring spot for Cameron while writing parts of "Avatar," and "Avatar: The Way of Water," according to WSJ.

Take a peek inside the Titanic director's eco-friendly coastal home.
