Is putting your backpack in a plane's overhead bin bad plane etiquette? TikTokers are weighing in.
- A TikToker sparked a discussion about overhead bin space on planes last month.
- He suggested putting personal items like backpacks and purses in overhead bins is bad plane etiquette.
A TikToker sparked a discussion about plane etiquette after sharing his opinion on the "worst" type of passenger.
Daniel Bennett, known as @dxnielbennett on social media, shared his thoughts in a 30-second TikTok video on November 11. The video has over six million views and more than 4,500 comments. On Instagram, the same video gained 229,000 likes and 2,600 comments.
"The easiest way to tell if someone is a good person in an airport is to see where they put their luggage when they get on a plane," Bennett said. "If they put their carry-on luggage in the overhead compartment and they put their personal item — like their backpack or their purse — under the seat, they're a good person and they're aware of their surroundings."
On the other hand, he argued that travelers who put small personal items in overhead bins, which are usually meant for carry-on luggage, are the "worst type of person."
"straight to jail," Bennett wrote in the video's caption.
Bennett's video resonated with many internet users, some of whom agreed with his hot take.
"Nothing makes me SEETHE like a small item in an overhead," one person wrote on TikTok.
One Instagram user added: "More often than not I notice it with middle aged and senior males. They're throwing their coat, suit jacket, laptop bag, keys, leftovers, gift shop bag, everything up there like it's a personal locker."
Some internet users added that they've witnessed flight attendants stepping in to stop travelers from putting personal items in overhead bins.
"I love it when a flight attendant takes small items out, hands it back to the owner, and puts my carryon in instead," one TikToker wrote.
Others offered a different perspective, defending those who put small personal items in overhead bins.
"Unpopular opinion but if they only have a backpack (no carry on suitcase) that can go in the bin," one person on TikTok wrote."
Discussions surrounding plane etiquette are popular on the internet. In March, TikTokers debated whether it was rude for travelers to use overhead bins at the front of the plane when they were assigned to the seats in the back.
"Don't place your carry-on in row 8 on your way to row 26," the video from @eye.be.okay read.
