  • Some US national parks require tourists to make a reservation before visiting.
  • Popular destinations like Yosemite National Park and Zion National Park are on the list.

National parks are beloved attractions in the US.

The scenic sights and outdoorsy activities attract millions to US national parks, typically open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The National Park Services (NPS) recorded 312 million recreation visits in 2022 compared to 297 million the previous year. Although there are 428 national park sites, there are only 63 that exclusively have "national park" in their name.

In 2024, nine national parks require guests to make reservations, ideally making navigating large crowds and exploring the terrain much easier.

The reservations are in addition to paying park entrance fees or obtaining an annual park pass, both of which range is price depending on the park. The reservations typically cost $2, excluding Shenandoah National Park, Haleakalā National Park, Zion National Park, and Acadia National Park.

Here are the national parks that need reservations this year.

Then, guests will need a reservation if they plan on visiting from April 13 through June 30 from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Starting July 1, guests have to make reservations between 5 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Finally, from August 17 to October 27, visitors will need reservations between 5 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

Additionally, guests driving into or through the park must have a reservation from April 13 to June 30, July 1 to August 16, and August 17 to October 27.

A reservation is required for Bear Lake Road Corridor — a popular area for hiking trails with scenic views — and access to the rest of the park between 5 a.m. and 6 p.m.

A second reservation option excludes Bear Lake Road Corridor and is applicable for entry to the entire park between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

These timed-entry permits will allow guests to enter the national park within two-hour windows with no set departure time.
