<p class="ingestion featured-caption">A selfie of the author on Norwegian Sky.Taylor Rains/Business Insider</p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Norwegian Cruise Line offers ships from barebones basic to amenity-heavy with grandiose attractions.</li><li>I sailed on Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Breakaway this year, which were built 14 years apart.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/norwegian-cruise-ships-breakaway-prima-compared-review-2024-10">Norwegian Cruise Line has a diverse fleet</a> of 19 oceanliners, ranging from small, basic ships to giant ones with action-packed amenities. </p><p>While I have yet to experience the company's extremely attraction-heavy <a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-review-new-11-billion-norwegian-prima-cruise-ship-2022-10">Norwegian Prima</a> class, I have sailed on the more bare-bones Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Breakaway.</p><p>The ships were built 14 years apart. Sky, <a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/booked-an-inside-cabin-cruise-worth-savings-norwegian-sky-2024-2">Norwegian's second-oldest and second-smallest ship</a> was unveiled in 1999. Breakaway launched in 2013 and is tied as Norwegian's <a target="_blank" class href="https://thepointsguy.com/cruise/norwegian-cruise-line-ships-biggest-smallest/">sixth</a> biggest ship at about 145,600 gross tons.</p><p><a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/norwegian-breakaway-oceanview-family-room-cruise-cabin-review-2024-10">Breakaway isn't new</a> by today's standards. But at twice the size of Sky, it has modern attractions and plentiful dining that offer a fair amount of added fun that the tinier ship lacks.</p><p>After sailing on both, I think I'd have a hard time sailing on Sky for any more than a few days — but <a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/norwegian-cruise-line-prima-old-new-ships-compared-photos-review-2024-2">Breakaway is a good middle-ground</a> for longer sailings.</p>
