I love London, and I was able to take a quick trip there at the end of 2023.Maryam Siddiqi
  • I used to live in the UK, and I recently returned to London for a quick four-day trip.
  • I recommend checking out the viewing platform at Horizon 22 and taking an Uber Boat on the Thames.

London is one of my favorite cities. There's so much to explore, and it's easy to get around central London on foot or via public transit.

Recently, a friend and I bought tickets to a concert there and built a short getaway around it. I used to live in London, and she'd never been, so we spent four days checking off some of the greatest hits and finding new experiences.

Here are four things I'd do again next time I'm in town and one thing I'd skip.

There are plenty of panoramic viewing spots in London — from rooftop restaurants to the London Eye Ferris wheel. But most come with a steep price tag, so I was keen to visit the free Horizon 22 platform.

The attraction opened in September 2023, and it's located in London's financial district, right by the Thames.

The platform offers fantastic views of popular London attractions from 58 floors up. You can spot the Gherkin (an office tower shaped like a pickle), the Shard, Tower Bridge, St. Paul's Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, and, on clear days, Wembley Stadium.

Tickets can be booked online, but I was too late to get a ticket in advance. Luckily, walk-ins are released every day at 10 a.m. I showed up, booked a ticket, and went up within a couple of minutes of my arrival.

Admission slots are timed, but when I visited, there was no limit to how long we could stay.

Pro tip: To avoid crowds, don't go at sunset, which seems to be the busiest time.

An Uber Boat ride doubles as a cheap and cheerful river cruise.

We could've returned from our concert via the Tube, London's subway system. But the O2 arena is right by one of the piers for Uber Boat by Thames Clippers, so I jumped at the chance to cruise the iconic river.

Don't expect any narration of city sights as you float by them; it's very much a form of transportation. But that doesn't take away from the fun of seeing London from the river.

There are three main routes, with service that varies depending on time and day of the week. Typically, they run early morning through late evening.

All three routes pass major landmarks, including Battersea Power Station, Westminster Abbey, and Tower Bridge. And with indoor and some outdoor seating, you can even see the city lit up at night.

The routes are split into three zones, and prices vary depending on how far you go. Our ride through two zones cost 12 pounds, or about $15, each.

Indulging in a Sunday roast was the perfect comfort meal.

A traditional Sunday roast includes roast chicken, potatoes, vegetables, and Yorkshire pudding.      Maryam Siddiqi

I wanted to show my friend one of the great British food traditions, and I liked the idea of spending a cozy afternoon enjoying comfort food.

A traditional Sunday roast is a hearty meal featuring roast beef or roast chicken, vegetables, potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding (a puffed baked bread), and plenty of gravy.

We dined at The Ivy in the West End, London's theatre district, where we were greeted by a doorman in a tailcoat and top hat. Our chicken was carved at the table, and the leisurely lunch was my favorite meal of the trip.

At The Ivy, the meal is available for about 30 pounds a person on Sunday afternoons.

The Tate Modern is home to a diverse collection of modern and contemporary art. It's also free, like many major galleries and museums in the city.

We decided to start one of our days there, arriving right as the art gallery opened at 10 a.m. The space was quiet, so it was a peaceful way to begin a day of sightseeing.

The gallery organizes its collection around different themes and even offers free 10-minute talks about certain pieces of art.

I felt relaxed after our morning there, and it inspired me to spend more time exploring galleries when I returned home.

Next time, I'd skip going to Borough Market on a Saturday.

Borough Market is a popular outdoor market in London.      Maryam Siddiqi

Borough Market, one of the largest markets in central London, is known for its farmer stalls, food vendors, and incredible selection of restaurants.

It's so legendary, in fact, that trying to maneuver through the crowds on a Saturday afternoon is a fool's errand.

Our timing was not intentional. We were nearby, hungry, and planned to visit the market at some point during our stay. But going at a weekend lunch hour meant the crowds were overwhelming.

We didn't get a chance to enjoy poking into shops and sampling as many of the street-food vendors as we would've liked. And we ended up leaving as soon as we could.
