  • Target is already stocking its Bullseye's Playground section with holiday decorations.
  • After shopping there, I think the $5 and under spot is a great place to find decor for small spaces.

It's beginning to look a lot like winter at Target — even if it's still October.

The retailer is slowly filling its shelves with holiday decorations, from classic string lights to sparkling ornaments. So I visited my local stores this week to see what offerings are available in Bullseye's Playground, the chain's popular $5 and under section.

After browsing through shelves of miniature trees, Christmas countdown calendars, and scented candles, I realized that the section is the perfect place to shop for decor, especially if you're on a budget and decorating a small space.

We've yet to reach Halloween, but Target is already stocking Christmas and other holiday items — so I visited two of my local stores to check out the retailer's $5 and under sections.

Bullseye's Playground, as it's formally known, is usually found at the front of Target stores. Though the sections were decorated for Halloween at the stores I visited, the shelves were mostly filled with winter merchandise.

Most things I found were extremely tiny, like mini nutcrackers and wooden trees for $1 each. I think they'd be perfect to line bookshelves, TV stands, and other furniture.

Some of my favorite small items were flocked signs that read "Joy" and scented candles in cute glass jars, both of which retailed for $3 each.

I'd consider buying these two decorations for my house.      Amanda Krause/Insider

I appreciated the range of neutral decor available, which is helpful if you don't want to theme your decor around a specific holiday.

There were a couple of larger items, like $5 bells, $5 glass jars, and $3 tabletop trees.

But nothing was so big that it would overpower a small space. This $5 Christmas countdown calendar, for example, was about a foot tall.

It's still early, so we're only seeing a portion of what Target will offer for the winter season this year. But if you want to get ahead of decorating your apartment or dorm, I think Bullseye's Playground might be the place to start.

Personally, I'll be decorating my space with items from the $5 and under section.      Amanda Krause/Insider
