The best traditional dishes in the world in 2022 that beat India's Shahi Paneer as per TasteAtlas

TasteAtlas, which claims to be a world atlas of traditional dishes, local ingredients, and authentic restaurants, released its own global ranking of top 100 traditional dishes in 2022. These are the top 10 dishes named in the list.

Karē — Japan

Karē is a curry dish popular in Japan. Compared to Indian curries, it’s less spicy, sweeter, darker, and usually thicker. There are three main versions of karē in Japan - karē raisu (curry over rice), karē udon (curry over noodles), and karē -pan (a pastry filled with curry).

Picanha — Brazil

It is a fresh cut of beef, which is highly popular in Brazil. Known as ‘sirloin cap’ in the US, it's mostly used for churrasco (grilled meat) – the meat is first grilled, then sliced off of a skewer.

Amêijoas à Bulhão Pato — Portugal

An appetizer, usually served with bread, this simple Portuguese dish combines clams and a flavorful sauce made from olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, white wine, and fresh cilantro.

Tangbao — China

Tangbao refers to a Chinese appetizer dish of soup-filled dumplings. What sets it apart from other dumplings is that the firm filling–usually made with minced pork or crab meat–transforms into a soup when steamed.

Guotie — China

Guotie is a pan-fried variety of the Chinese jiaozi dumpling. It is one of the main dishes in Northern China and is typically filled with minced pork, Chinese cabbage, scallions, ginger, rice wine, and sesame seed oil.

Phanaeng Curry — Thailand

A type of Thai curry, Phanaeng curry has a thick texture with salty-sweet peanut flavour. It consists of meat that is stewed with dried chilis, kaffir lime leaves, coconut milk, cilantro, cumin, garlic, lemongrass, shallots, and peanuts.

Ceviche mixto — Peru

It is a classic Peruvian appetizer different from traditional ceviche. Traditionally, ceviche uses raw fish cured in fresh citrus juices, most commonly lime or lemon. But ceviche mixto includes other seafood, such as shrimp, squid, octopus, clams, or scallops.

Ghormeh sabzi — Iran

It is an Iranian herb stew, commonly eaten everywhere in Iran and considered to be the national dish of the country. Traditional Persian rice, known as polo, is usually served alongside ghormeh sabzi.

Cağ kebabı — Turkey

Originating from the Turkish city of Erzurum, it is a kebab made with lamb that’s marinated with onions, salt, and pepper for about 12 hours, and then placed on a big horizontal skewer and cooked over a wood fire.

Pollo a la brasa — Peru

Another Peruvian dish to make it to the list, Pollo a la brasa consists of juicy charcoal-grilled chicken, traditionally served with french fries and salads. Taste Atlas claims over 27 million Peruvians eat this dish daily.

India’s Shahi Paneer and Hyderabadi Biryani in the list

The list also included two Indian dishes — Shahi Paneer and Hyderabadi Biryani at 28th and 79th position, respectively. Shahi Paneer is a curry-based dish made of cottage cheese, from Mughlai cuisine.

What sets apart Hyderabadi Biryani?

Hyderabadi Biryani is also from the Mughlai cuisine. What separates it from other types of biryani is the cooking style. Hyderabdi Biryani cooks raw rice and raw meat together with exotic spices. This cooking style is known as dum.
