Hailey Bieber finally explained why she and Justin Bieber wear opposite outfits
  • Hailey Bieber has explained why she and her husband Justin Bieber often wear opposite outfits.
  • Speaking with GQ, the Rhode founder said Justin often gets dressed first.

The internet has been poking fun at the opposite styles of Hailey Bieber and Justin Bieber for months — but the couple is in on the joke.

Speaking with GQ's Eileen Cartter, Hailey finally explained why she and her husband often wear dramatically different outfits to the same event. While the Rhode founder is often in chic dresses and heels, Justin typically wears sweats and baseball caps.

"It's so funny because I see so many people talk about this," Hailey told the publication.

Noting that Justin usually gets dressed before her, Hailey said that "he may want to wear baggy sweats to dinner" while she "might want to wear a tiny little dress," simply because that's how she's feeling.

"We can't sit there and be like, 'So I'm going to wear this and you're going to wear this,'" she told GQ.

Though Hailey and Justin have long dressed in opposite styles, their mismatched fashion went viral over the summer when the two were photographed attending a Rhode event in New York City.

Hailey donned a red minidress and diamond jewels to launch her newest beauty product, and Justin sported a gray sweatsuit, pink hat, and yellow Crocs with white socks.

The internet quickly entered a debate into whether Justin's casual outfit undermined his wife's big day, or if his outfit allowed her to stand out.

The couple also famously attended the 2022 Grammys in opposite outfits.

Justin hit the red carpet in an oversized Balenciaga suit styled with a white undershirt, chunky Balenciaga boots, black sunglasses, and a neon-pink beanie.

Hailey, on the other hand, sported a sleek white gown from Saint Laurent. The strapless dress had a floor-length skirt and was accessorized with a beaded necklace.

And on occasion, the Biebers do coordinate their looks.

At the US Open on September 1, both Hailey and Justin wore black leather jackets over white pieces.

They did accessorize differently — with Hailey sporting her diamond "B" necklace and Justin in bubble-esque pink sunglasses — but their looks had the same base.

Still, as Hailey hinted to GQ, the couple seems to favor their respective styles over matching with one another.

Erin Eagle, a fashion stylist and the founder of outfit-inspo site A Style Set, described their two aesthetics differently.

While Hailey is a "trendsetter" with a "refined and chic" style, she said, Justin goes for more comfortable looks that fall into the realm of "oversized, casual streetwear."

"Although their outfits don't seem to go together visually, it's nice that they have their own unique styles and don't try to dress exactly the same or in a way that isn't authentic," Eagle told Insider. "I think it works for them – they shouldn't feel pressured by the public to perfectly coordinate their outfits."

"Fashion is all about self-expression and being confident in your own style, so I appreciate that they respect each other's," she added.
