‘Maybe our girlfriends are our soulmates…

… and guys are just people to have fun with’ - said author Candace Bushnell, whose column inspired the hit Hollywood franchise, Sex and the City. She was voicing what women, for centuries, have felt about their female friends. Galentine’s day—celebrated a day before Valentine’s on February 13—is designed for women to celebrate the female friendships or women in their lives.

How did Galentine’s Day start?

The hit sitcom Parks and Recreation gave birth to Galentine’s day in 2010, in episode 16 of season 2. The term was coined when the show’s protagonist, Leslie Knope, took her girlfriends out for a day of “ladies celebrating ladies”.

Celebrating Galentine’s Day

The best way to celebrate the day is to spend time with your girlfriends - whether it’s by picking a new activity or indulging in a good, old-fashioned brunch. Moreover, since the time the Parks and Recreation episode aired in 2010, the day has become popular enough with several gifting options available across categories.

The classic gifts - makeup and jewellery

Pre-prepared gift hampers from The Body Shop or a curated selection of make-up from different brands always makes for a good gift. Or just buy the cute necklace your friend adds to the cart every time but never buys. You can also take advantage of online sales, like Reliance JioMart’s ‘Gifts Of Love’ sale across products like jewellery, dresses, and makeup, among other things.

If you’re confused, get gift cards

We may know our best friends but may not always know what they want. If that’s the case with you, get a gift card from their favourite apparel stores like H&M or Zara or even marketplaces like Amazon, and let them buy what their heart desires.

Gifts you can experience together

Another way of celebrating the day is to indulge in a fun, exciting activity together - from a pottery session to a dance class, from baking desserts to wine tasting or even cocktail making, there’s no limit to the activities you can partake in with your friends.

The gift of company

Swamped with household chores and struggling with office deadlines, most of us tend to put our friendships on the back burner. Galentine’s day can be the perfect time for reconnecting with your friends beyond memes and voice notes - perhaps by lounging under the sun in Sunder Nursery in Delhi, or Cubbon Park in Bengaluru!

For long-distance friendships

Just because your friend isn’t in the same town, city, or even country as you, doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate Galentine’s day - you can always get yummy desserts delivered through Zomato, or watch a show or movie together through Amazon Prime Video Watch Party or Teleparty.

The OG tradition: waffles and brunch

Of course, you can opt to celebrate the day in the traditional style - with a brunch of waffles and cocktails, just as depicted on the show. You can always try out new cuisines as well and get the perfect Instagram photo - like at Pizza by The Bay or The Finch in Mumbai, or Diggin in Delhi.
