Frontier Airlines is fueling the competition in Fort Lauderdale as it goes head-to-head with its low-cost rival Spirit Airlines.
Frontier announced on Tuesday that it is expanding its network with 18 new routes across the US, Mexico, and the Caribbean, with fares starting at $19 one-way. The airline is expanding service in Cancun, Mexico, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, and adding two new cities to its route map, including Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.
The company's main focus is on Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, which is an all-new destination. According to the carrier, it will launch 12 new routes out of the city come mid-February, applying pressure on Spirit's home turf.
According to statistics from the airport, Spirit Airlines has the greatest market share at Fort Lauderdale, having transported over 750,000 passengers in October, up 13.7% from 2019.
However, Frontier is making moves to shake things up and add low-cost competition to the market. According to the carrier, it will compete with Spirit on three routes out of Fort Lauderdale, including Atlanta, Orlando, and Philadelphia.
Frontier's senior vice president of commercial, Daniel Shurz explained in a press release that the new routes will "complement" its already booming network across Mexico, the Caribbean, and South Florida.
"We're excited to announce 18 nonstop routes today and two new destinations; Aguadilla and Fort Lauderdale," Shurz said. "We look forward to welcoming travelers onboard to these popular vacation destinations this winter, and beyond."
