Business Name Generator (BNG), an AI-based digital organisation that is part of the performance marketing group Marketzoo, ranked 50 cities across metrics such as the available creative roles, salaries for creatives, amenities like art galleries, museums, etc. to arrive at a list of best and worst creative cities in the world.

Creatives include graphic designers, game artists, musicians, etc. BNG shared that as per the UN, “the creative economy is projected to reach a global valuation of $985 billion by 2023 and could represent 10 percent of global GDP before 2030.” Here are the results of the research:

Delhi ranked as the worst city in the world for creatives to live and work in. The average monthly salary of creatives in Delhi was estimated at $653 (about ₹54,000). The study also found that the city has an estimated 9,592 creative roles and only 9 creative classes and workshops.

The average monthly salary for creatives in Mumbai (at $558 or about ₹46,000) is lower than in Delhi, ranking it the second worst city. However, it ranks higher than Delhi in the number of green spaces (84), creative workshops (14), and the overall number of creative roles (9,802).

The Philippines capital, Manila, ranks above Delhi despite a lower average monthly salary (at $470, about ₹39,000) - but scores higher on the number of available creative roles. Johannesburg, Tel Aviv, Athens, and Melbourne are the other cities on the list.

On the other hand, Japan’s capital city Tokyo is the creative capital of the world, with the highest number of creative jobs (54,871), green spaces and parks (671), museums and art galleries (918), and creative classes and workshops (113).

After Tokyo, London, Paris, Chicago, and Toronto—in that order—complete the list of the top five cities for creative individuals. Despite ranking at the top, Tokyo offers the lowest average monthly salary ($3,223, about ₹2.7 lakh) among the top 5 cities - but, along with Paris, also has the lowest monthly cost of living ($990, about ₹82,000) for a single person without rent.

With an average yearly salary of $86,300 or about ₹71 lakh ($7,192 per month i.e. about ₹5.9 lakh), San Francisco is the highest-paid city for creatives. However, overall, it ranks seventh on the list of best cities for creatives.

Six of the ten cities with the highest earning potential for creatives are in the USA- San Francisco, followed by Los Angeles, New York City, Boston, Miami, and Chicago. Dubai, Copenhagen, Singapore, and Hong Kong, in that order, complete the top 10.
