- The 2020
Chevrolet C8 Corvette is being recalled because certain examples suffer from a defect that causes the front trunk latch to stop working after the car is off. - The recall notice says that it could be potentially dangerous because "a small person" could climb into the trunk and then get stuck inside.
- This recall is separate from other claims that the front trunk lid suddenly flies open during low-speed driving.
The mid-engine Chevrolet C8
The recall, issued on August 6, involves a defective interior trunk release button not working after the car's power is switched off after 10 minutes, according to the recall notice as reported by Road & Track.
Certain affected 2020 Corvettes fail to enter a low-power "sleep mode" after powering off for 10 minutes, the notice reads. Because of that, the trunk lid release button, which is found in the car's front trunk, might not work after the car is off.
The 2020 Corvette has a front trunk because it is a mid-engined car. For this latest C8 generation, the engine was moved from its previous position in front of the driver to behind the driver, thus freeing up the front of the car for storage space.
The notice describes a risk situation where, "If the trunk lid is left open, a small person who climbs inside the front trunk compartment and closes the trunk lid while inside may not be able to get out without assistance, increasing the risk of injury."
The fix, thankfully, sounds simple: General Motors just needs to update the software in the Corvettes' Body Control Module to reduce the necessary voltage needed to "wake" the car from its low-power sleep mode. Once that happens, the interior trunk release button will work while the car is in that sleep mode.
Road & Track reports that this recall is independent of a previous Jalopnik report, where some
Jalopnik reported that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filed a public complaint where one owner said their front trunk lid "flew up and completely blocked ... vision of the roadway" when they reached an approximate speed of 25 to 30 mph.
