Meet the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, a concept car that previews what future BMWs will look like.

BMW unveiled the design concept at an auto show on Saturday.
It's just a concept car, so it's unlikely that BMW will sell a model that looks exactly like this.

But the one-off vehicle gives a good idea of the kind of direction BMW is taking with its future designs.
The car keeps some classic BMW design elements, like its split grille and double headlights.

But BMW brought those timeless elements into the 21st — or maybe 22nd — century.
It looks straight out of science fiction, but also pared-down and minimalist.

"The design of the Neue Klasse is typically BMW and so progressive it looks like we skipped a model generation," Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW group's head of design, said in a press release.
The car's 3D-printed taillights were conceived to "create an impression of depth," BMW said.

You can see the same look up front, too.
BMW didn't just rethink its exterior design — it brought the same forward-thinking approach to the Neue Klasse's interior.

Electric powertrains, which are more compact than regular engines and transmissions, let car companies maximize interior space for passengers and their stuff.
The interior looks super clean, modern, and uncluttered.

Instead of a rectangular screen, BMW put in a quirky parallelogram.
It's full of bright fabrics and lacks chrome and leather details.

BMW said that removing those decorative elements should help make manufacturing less carbon-intensive. It looks like BMW is moving away from traditional luxury and toward a more spartan look.
The steering wheel is flat on top and bottom.

It's reminiscent of the angular wheel you get in BMW's iX SUV.
In addition to a central touchscreen, the concept has an ultra-wide display that's projected onto the windshield.

Here's a feature that truly sounds like it's from the future: BMW says the driver or passenger will be able to move content from the main screen to the head-up display "with a simple gesture."
Slim pillars and big windows make the interior look open and airy.

Seats that are mounted to the floor by a single bracket each create extra legroom, BMW said.
A standout feature of the cabin is a humongous glass roof.

Let's hope that makes it into the final product.
Here's another view of the roof, this time from above.

From this angle you can also see that the Vision Neue Klasse has four seats instead of the expected five.
BMW also said its next-generation cars will charge 30% faster and offer 30% more range than its current technology allows.

It all sounds — and looks — pretty promising. But we'll have to wait a few years for the real deal.
