  • Barbra Streisand wrote about meeting the late Princess Diana in her new memoir.
  • In the book, published on Tuesday, Streisand said Diana once helped her avoid a fashion faux pas.

Barbra Streisand wrote about how the late Princess Diana helped her avoid a fashion faux pas at a movie premiere, according to an excerpt from her new memoir published by People.

In the book, which is titled "My Name Is Barbra" and was published on Tuesday, Streisand opened up about meeting the late princess in 1992 at the UK premiere of "The Prince of Tides," which Streisand starred in and directed.

According to People's Janine Henni, Streisand wrote that she and Diana were seated together during the screening, which was held at Leicester Square in London. Streisand noted that she didn't stand from her seat to acknowledge the audience's applause until Diana encouraged her to do so, as she had intended to follow royal protocol and wait for the royal to stand first, Henni added.

"The zipper on my skirt had come down a bit as I was sitting, and she noticed and quickly started to zip it up for me as I got to my feet," Streisand wrote, according to the publication.

"When I finally sat down, Diana turned to me and asked, 'Do you know how wonderful you are?'" she added.

In another portion of the book paraphrased in the People article, Streisand said that Diana's compliment "came as a shock" as it reminded her of songwriter Marilyn Bergman, who she said asked her the same question at the beginning of her career 30 years prior.

"I certainly didn't know it then. Did I know it now? I'm not sure…maybe a little. I thought Diana was wonderful. I wonder if she knew how wonderful she was," the actress wrote, according to People.

Streisand also wrote in her memoir about the "unexpected friendship" she shares with Diana's ex-husband, King Charles, that has spanned decades, according to an excerpt shared by Insider's entertainment reporter Libby Torres.

As Torres reported, Streisand wrote that she first met Charles in Los Angeles in 1974 and they shared a cup of tea.

"I was drinking tea and offered him a sip… and the future king of England actually drank from my cup, which was apparently unprecedented. When the British press reported on this, they turned it into the equivalent of an international incident," she wrote.

Writing about their friendship today, Streisand said she has visited the king at his home and that they regularly send birthday cards and presents to one another.
