  • Avelo Airlines is launching six new routes to popular vacation destinations this winter.
  • The young airline is starting operations in Florida out of its new East Coast base on November 3.

New low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines is expanding its route network with six new destinations this winter, including beach and ski destinations across the US. The expansion comes as the industry sees a strong travel rebound heading into the holiday season, especially as the Delta variant-fueled COVID wave continues to recede and people feel comfortable flying again.

Two of the new city pairs are from New Haven, Connecticut, the airline's new East Coast base. Avelo is launching its first flight to Florida on November 3 out of New Haven with plans to add four more markets in the Sunshine State by mid-January. Avelo CEO Andrew Levy explained Florida is a "safe" market because there is always going to be demand, but the company just needs to find the right balance of frequencies at the right price point.

"We're feeling good about bookings going into November. I think we're going to have a really strong start in the markets we're going into," Levy said.

While Avelo is only starting with flights to Florida, Levy told Insider that it is likely the carrier will also offer routes to states just north of Florida and around the Midwest, which would be right in the sweet spot for the company's short-haul strategy.

Avelo has also been expanding on the West Coast, particularly in Las Vegas where it is adding three routes. According to Levy, destinations served out of California have been doing well for the carrier, so adding an additional spoke to Las Vegas makes sense. Levy explained all four markets it plans to serve from Las Vegas, including Santa Rosa, Redding, and Eureka in California and Fort Collins in Colorado, do not have any current nonstop options to Sin City.

"We're going into these markets where we can offer something the doesn't already exist there. Fort Collins and Redding bookings are doing well, so we feel good about what we're doing out West," Levy told Insider.
